Very sad to read of Shih Sheng’s passing. I first met him when he visited his old friend Balfour Halevy at Osgoode back in the 70’s when I was a very new, green law librarian. Shih Sheng treated all of the librarians at Osgoode Law School to a wonderful Chinese lunch. I can still remember it. Then when I moved to Alberta, Shih Sheng was my boss when I worked at the Calgary Courthouse Library. A kind, gentle man. My thoughts are with you in your loss.

Dearest Susan and family, Our sincere condolences. Shih Sheng brightened my day every morning with his warm smile and gentle manner. Our dining room table was a table of family. It was an honour to have known him.

I met Shih Sheng when he was at the Law Society Library in Edmonton. He was always very kind in helping with research questions and discussing issues of the day. He will be remembered fondly.

As a long term law librarian, I owe a great deal to Shih Sheng. He helped shape the law library community I ‘grew up’ in and I am most grateful for his contributions and his warm, welcoming nature. May his legacy be remembered forever.

Condolence from Kathy Fisher on April 30th, 2015 5:05 PM

I had the privilege and pleasure of working under Shih-sheng for almost a decade. He enlightened us with his unique point of view and inspired us with his deep love of family and friends. During the CALL conference in Montreal, he impatiently waited to meet my mother who was coming to join us at the luncheon. She looks a lot like me, and Shih-sheng spotted her before I did. He raced up to her, shaking her hand vigourously, with a big smile and his characteristic delight. We always had our Edmonton business meetings over dim sum at the Marco Polo. He brought his grace, warmth, humanity and intelligence to all he did. Shih-sheng shall be remembered fondly by those lucky enough to have crossed his path, especially in the Alberta and Manitoba legal communities. My deepest sympathies for your loss.

As a Sales Representative in law publishing in Western Canada over the past 48 years, I have many happy memories and none more so than my frequent visits with Shih Sheng in both Calgary and Edmonton. He was always so helpful and caring and he made me so welcome whenever I called to see him. Over one lunch, I remember complimenting him on his remarkable memory and he said that it helped him so much with his academic achievements. I asked him for his secret and he replied, with a twinkle in his eye, ‘Eat lots of Dim sum!!’ Shih Sheng influenced so many people along life’s way and his legacy will live on. He will be missed by so many and my thoughts are with you at this sad time.

Dear Susan and family,

I was very saddened to hear of Shih Sheng’s passing. I remember his first day at Garrison when we began our friendship. I was unaware of his vast accomplishments throughout his life. I knew only that he was thoughtful and kind, a gentle soul. He was clever and witty and would often bring a smile to my face. Please accept my families heartfelt sympathies. With affection and fond remembrance,
