HOUSTON, William (Bill) Francis

July 1, 1942 – Lethbridge, Alberta
April 12, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

Bill Houston of Calgary, passed away on April 12, 2018 at the age of 75 years.

It is with very heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of William “Bill” Houston. Papa Bill, to those who had the good fortune of knowing him, was authentically honest, genuinely humble and truly altruistic.

He was born in Lethbridge, Alberta, but at a young age, his family moved to Calgary. With his parents, brothers Bob and Frank and sister Carol, he lived his early years in West Mount Pleasant. Bill had 2 careers — he was a draftsman for Union Oil and then the helpful, friendly face at Chesney Home Hardware. Upon retirement, Papa Bill focused his attention on improving his golf game and enjoyed watching his legacy grow through his expanding family of grandchildren. You could find Papa Bill watching dance recitals and in the stands at soccer, hockey or baseball games. He adored his family and his family truly adored him.

He is survived by his sons Blair (Amy Kramer) and Trevor (Martine Audet) and his 6 grandchildren Nicci, Jackson, Marley, True, Shiloh and Case. Bill was predeceased by his loving wife of 42 years, Tilly and parents (William and Gladys).

The family is encouraging friends to join them at the Winston Golf Club (formally the Elks) to celebrate Papa Bill’s life on Friday, April 20, 2018 between 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to Brown Bagging for Calgary Kids, 310, 223 12th Ave. S.W. Calgary, AB T2R 0G9, Tel; 403-264-7979; https://bb4ck.org/donate-now/ or STARS Air Ambulance, 1441 Aviation Park N.E., Calgary, AB T2E 8M7, Tel; 403-295-181; www.stars.ca, as Bill loved his community, friends and helping whomever he encountered. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

In living memory of Bill Houston, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Chapel of the Bells, 2720 CENTRE STREET NORTH, Telephone: 403-276-2296.

  6. Glenn Wyrostok :

I was very sorry to read about Bill’s passing. Bill and I go back quite a few years as we used to ride the same bus every morning to get to downtown Calgary and spent most of our trip talking about hockey, ball or golf. Being residents of Huntington Hills we used to run into each other all the time at the hockey rink or at the ball diamonds. Bill also drove up many times to golf with me at the Sundre Golf Club when I was a member there. My condolences go to Blair and Trevor and families.

  10. Bill & Helen Miller :

My condolences to Trevor, Blair & families. I was fortunate to meet Bill & Tillie while you boys were playing hockey in Huntington Hills. During the years since then whenever I met Bill in the community he always had time for a visit & to tell me what his sons were doing. Very proud of both of you. It was my pleasure to know Bill.
We will light our prayer candle with all of you in mind.
