HOURD, Shirley Jean

August 25, 1923 – Winnipeg, Manitoba
May 8, 2016 – Calgary, Alberta

Our dear Mother, Aunt, Grandmother, Great-Grandmother, and Great-Great-Grandmother passed away in her sleep (her wish come true) on Mother’s Day at the age of 92.

Shirley was born in Winnipeg to Jessie and William McLellan, the youngest of 5 children (Arthur, George, William, and Audrey, who have all predeceased her). Shirley met Wilbert Hourd on a blind date and they were married on December 18, 1943. They settled in Winnipeg and welcomed 7 children into their lives. In 1970 they relocated with the 4 youngest children to Springbank on the West side of Calgary. The family settled into the community and over the subsequent years Shirley and Will became active participants in many groups and events. Their house was a hub of activities involving children and pets (far too numerous to mention), but Mom always found time to tend to her precious garden, feed the birds, read and try her hand at various crafts such as baking, knitting and making chocolates. She was active in the Springbank United Church, UCW, Curling Club, Springbank Arts and Craft Club, Garden Club, Springbank Church Choir, Lioness Club and Springbank Heritage Club.

After Will’s passing in 2000, Shirley remained in Springbank, living on her own until March 30 of this year when she moved into the Royal Park Retirement Residence in Calgary. Once there, she set off to become involved in a myriad of activities offered, including the choir. As Mom would say, “I love to sing!”

She was the proud matriarch of five generations who meant the world to her! Left to celebrate her legacy and memories are her children, Barbara (deceased 2002) and Ron Scott, Judy and Don Irving, Susan and Ken Rogers, Bert and Dana Hourd, Kathy and Rod Baker, Debbie Hourd, Greg Gramlich, Linda and Michael Buckner; grandchildren, Steve (Melanie), Heather (Tyler), Karen, Michael (Farrah), Ryan, Kendal, Chris, Jessica (Taylor), Sarah (Wesley), Ty, Brittany (Trevor), Sean, Jeffrey and Matthew have many, treasured memories of adventures with Grandma. Shirley is also survived by thirteen great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. The family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks to Shirley’s many friends and acquaintances who enriched her life with kind thoughts, words and deeds over the years.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Springbank United Church, (250011 Range Road 33, Calgary, AB T3Z 1L2) on Saturday, June 18, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. Following the Service, a reception will be held at the Springbank Heritage Club.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Springbank United Church and the Veteran’s Food Bank (4539 – 6th Street N.E., Calgary, AB T2E 3Z6 Telephone: 403-265-6304).

In living memory of Shirley Hourd, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Park Memorial, 5008 ELBOW DRIVE S.W. Calgary, AB, T2S 2L5, Telephone: 403-243-8200.
