Herb was like another dad to me. The very first time I ever went camping was with the Hornford family who were brave enough to take five teenage girls out to the country for the weekend. Herb and Shirley managed to keep us all well entertained. It’s one of my great childhood memories!

I loved Herb’s laugh! He was a great man and the world is a lonelier place without him!

Uncle Herb was a sweet guy. He had the craziest laugh, and a huge heart. You couldn’t help but like him. He was my God Father. For my 16th birthday he gave me an amethyst ring, which is still very precious to me even after all these years. When the family moved to Australia we were all jealous! When the returned they brought us stuffed koala bears and some periwinkle snail shells. They were pretty, but no fun to play with, so we thought. Much to everyone’s surprise, some of them made the trip and were still alive!! We had so much fun watching them move. To bad they didn’t last. Some of the best memories are the little things. Dad tells stories of Amma, Afi and the three brothers antics when they were young on the farm, and we all laugh out loud! What a great childhood. Herb went on to be a geophysicist and Harold became a geologist, so for years they still had common things to discuss. It’s sad that growing families, and responsibilities take so much of our time and visiting gets put to the back burner. Herb and Harold still made time for the Christmas and birthday lengthy chats though.
Our wish for Shirley and her family is to stop and take the time to remember the great memories they all made together and to hold them tightly in you hearts while your lives continue. He’ll be missed. We’ll all smile when we think of him.

We will miss Herb, his sense of humour and his great laugh. Growing up I spent almost as much time at the Hornford’s as I did at my own home. Herb seldom called me by my given name…always Burnsey! He carried on the tradition with my husband. He was always willing to show us his latest creation or tell a good story…slowly and calmly! We both have many great memories of Herb.

On behalf of the Woodcreek Seniors, I want to express our sincere condolences to Shirley and family. for the loss of Herb. Words seem inadequate to express our sadness as Herb and Shirley were members of our group for a number of years. May you find peace in your memories of Herb as a husband, father and grandfather.
