HOPWOOD, Thomas “John”

January 24, 1918 – Liverpool, England
March 6, 2019 – Calgary, Alberta

John Hopwood of Calgary passed away on Wednesday, March 6, 2019 at the age of 101 years.

John was awarded an Open Scholarship to The Queens College, and took his B.A. at Oxford University. After serving six years in the British Army during the war and leaving with the rank of Major, he was admitted into the Law Society of England in 1949. In 1953 he was admitted to the Alberta Bar. He joined Howard Mackie as a partner in 1969. In 1990, he retired from Howard Mackie (now Borden Ladner Gervais L.L.P.) but he continued to work as Counsel.

John was a founding director of the Calgary Philharmonic Society and served as its president for two years. He was named the Society’s one and only Honorary Director. He was a life member of the Alpine Club of Canada and has served as a director and officer of the companies which established the Lake Louise Ski Area and the Lake Louise Inn. John was also instrumental with several partners in the Building Kings Domain Condo’s. He loved listening to music and enjoyed the mountains, especially skiing and has won many Ski medals in his time. At the age of eighty, he took up a new love of golf.

John is survived by his daughter and son-in-law Valerie and Jamie Crawford; his grandchildren, Ewan and Jean Adams; his wife Mary Hopwood and her children, Lesley Ann Cardinal and Barbara Pierce and their families.

John was predeceased by his daughter Rowan Adams and his brother Cyril Hopwood.

    John lived such a long and enriching life. I remember John ‘walking the ham’ too. That was so great. John’s passion for music and skiing was inspiring. I believe John skied until he was 80. Wow. My condolences to all.
