HOOPER, Eileen Elizabeth (nee Robinson)

March 20, 1930 – Detroit, Michigan
September 11, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

Eileen Elizabeth Hooper of Calgary, AB, passed away peacefully at home on September 11, 2018 at the age of 88 years.

She was born March 20, 1930 in Detroit Michigan to Dr. Harvey and Sadie Robinson. The family moved to Calgary when she was fifteen. Eileen was a musician and music teacher who performed and taught from the age of fourteen.

In 1957 she married her music teacher, Robert Hooper. Together they founded Foothills Music, teaching piano, organ, voice, and music theory to hundreds of Calgarians for over fifty years. Students found Mrs. Hooper encouraging yet demanding. With high expectations she evoked the gift of music from within them.

Eileen was an associate of the Royal Conservatory of Toronto and a Fellow of the Trinity College of Music in London, England. She held posts in the Calgary Society of Organists and the Royal Conservatory as well. She served as organist and choir director for All Saints Anglican Church for twenty years, dating from 1979. She then joined Mr. Hooper at St. Matthew Lutheran Church where she directed the choir and curated the music collection. For thirty years the Hoopers directed Foothills Opera, an amateur company, offering opera to Calgarians from all walks of life.

The Hoopers were faithful patrons of the Calgary Opera and Philharmonic Orchestra. They traveled every year to music festivals in Europe and the Shakespeare Festival in Stratford Ontario.

Eileen was generous, creative, and intense. She and Robert brought aging relatives into their home for care. They frequently entertained students, colleagues, and friends. They loved animals; students remember seven cats perched around the house critiquing their work.

Eileen is survived by her cousin, Roger Robinson; niece, Sita Diehl, and nephew, Neil Robinson.

Funeral Services will be held at St. Matthew Lutheran Church (66 – 7th Street N.E., Calgary, AB), on Saturday, October 6, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. Graveside Service to follow at Queen’s Park Cemetery. Reception to follow at Heritage Funeral Home (1708 16 Ave N.W., Calgary, AB).

Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. The family is grateful to her caregivers, Nilda Vidal, Marion Robatzek, Renee Haraga and Kofi Owoo for her well-being through the last moment of life. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to The Calgary Humane Society, www.calgaryhumane.ca; or The Calgary Society of Organists, www.rccocalgary.org, or the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS), www.natscalgary.org.
