HOLMES, Robert “Darryl”

February 21, 1941 – Saskatoon, Saskatchewan
January 17, 2019 – Calgary, Alberta

With great sadness, we announce the death of Darryl Holmes who passed away suddenly on January 17, 2019 at the age of 77.

Darryl was born in Saskatoon in 1941. At university he took a degree in geology. He often told the story of how, on his own on a rock-identifying trip to the wilds in the Northwest Territories, he found himself being stalked by a wolverine. Perhaps owing to this, Darryl returned to university, taking another degree – accountancy, a safer field in which he excelled. Darryl married Pat (née Samson) and soon had a daughter. In 1969, to take a job, he moved his young family to Calgary where two sons would join the family. In Calgary, Darryl built a very successful career and made many good friends. He remained in the city until his death.

Darryl and Pat divorced, and Darryl later married Denise (née Tearne). Tragically Denise passed away after a hard battle with cancer, and Darryl never got over her loss.

Darryl was an avid sports fan especially harness racing (even part-owning a horse or two). A transplanted Saskatchewan boy, he bled green for his Riders but also loved to cheer for (yell at) his Flames. Golf gave him great joy and he played as often as he could and was always yearning to get out and play again.

Darryl was predeceased by his mother (Kay) in 2015 and his sister (Margaret) in 2018. He is survived by his brother Terry (Marilyn); daughter Kathleen (Brad); sons Paul and David (Claire); grandchildren Alexei, Christian, Sam and Ollie; nieces, nephews, step-children, and many friends, all of whom will miss him deeply.

A family gathering will be held at a later date. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

In living memory of Darryl Holmes, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Fish Creek, 14441 Bannister Road S.E., Calgary, AB, T2X 3J3, Telephone: 403-256-9575.

To Kathleen, Paul, David and families, hugs and kisses. You are in our prayers at this time.

Being family members, we got to share most of the happy times and happy places of Darryl’s life: cheering the Riders at old Taylor Field and the family BBQs after & those long drives back to Saskatoon; his first Ford Mustang – what a classic; that GMC family van & the holiday trips listening to Willy sing “On the Road Again”; sitting with him in the stands at Stampede Park betting on his trotters; and finally playing a round at his favorite course, with a beer & a burger after. He couldn’t go 20 minutes without a cig even on the golf course.

So Darryl… tell St. Peter at the Golden Gate,
That you hate to make him wait,
But you just gotta have another cigarette.
See you down the road old friend. Thanks for the memories.
