HOCH, Ottmar Friedrich

July 15, 1951 – Garssen (Celle), Germany
September 25, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

With heavy hearts we announce the peaceful passing of Ottmar Friedrich Hoch in the evening of September 25, 2018.

Ottmar was born in the village of Garssen (Celle), Germany on July 15, 1951. He came to Canada at two years of age with his father Sigismund and mother Elfriede (both deceased) and older brother. He lived in Edmonton until he started his career. He graduated from the University of Alberta with an Engineering degree (electrical) and an MBA. He spent most of his career with Halliburton Energy Services, enjoying problem solving and mentoring. He was very analytical and excellent at fixing things and finding solutions to problems. Ottmar was a very kind and generous person. His dream of working overseas became a reality in 1996 with a transfer to Australia then to Gabon. He also worked all over Western Africa and even in Oman. Ottmar loved his family, working with the church physical plant team, traveling, camping. Ottmar played several instruments and loved music. He enjoyed the Calgary symphonies, Rosebud Theatre, singing with Uuphonia, birds and last but not least spending time with his grandchildren.

Left to grieve are his wife (Pierrette Lavallée-Hoch), children Tarl (Carrie), Ian (Joanne), Gabrielle Travnik (Tyson) and Camille Mian (Ahmed). Grandchildren Myra, Ashar, Leila, Lily, Ali and baby Felix. Siblings Oswald (Karen Barrington) and Susan King (Andy), nephew Andy and nieces Emma and Jennifer, extended family in Canada and Germany. La famille de Pierrette au Québec, Pierre (Suzanne Gariépy), Lorraine (Raymonde Zimmer), Jocelyn (Linda Lévesque), Denis (décédé), neveux, nièce, cousin(e)s, oncles et tantes.
Our family wishes to thank the Tom Baker Cancer Centre, Homecare Palliative support, Dulcina Hospice at Ste-Marguerite Manor and the many friends and family members who fed us, phoned, messaged, visited and spent nights with Ottmar. Your compassion and help were unsurpassed.

    Pierette:
My heart goes out to you and your loss. The following is a passage that has always gotten me through many of my losses.
Death is nothing at all … I have only slipped away into the next room … I am I and you are you … whatever we were to each other that we still are. Call me by my old familiar name, speak to me in the easy way which you always used. Put no difference in your tone; wear no forced air of solemnity or sorrow. Laugh as we always laughed at the little jokes we enjoyed together. Play, smile, think of me, pray for me. Let my name be ever the household word that it always was. Let it be spoken without an effort, with out the ghost of a shadow on it. Life means all that it ever meant, it is the same as it ever was; there is absolutely unbroken continuity. What is this death but a negligible accident? Why should I be out of mind because I am out of sight? I am but waiting for you, for an interval somewhere very near just around the corner. All is well.”

  36. Ottmar,
You were one of the smartest, funniest, and modest people I ever met. An incredible conversationalist. I always looked forward to your visits to the barber shop. The banter you, Gary, and I had was priceless.
You were a legend in the oil industry, my friend. When it came to fracking wells, you were known around the world.
I’m sorry I missed your funeral. I will forever miss our conversations and your friendship.
    Rest in peace, my friend.
