HIGGIN, Dr. John Ross

The family of John Higgin is deeply saddened to announce his passing on November 2, 2018 at 90 years of age. He leaves to cherish his memory his beloved wife of 64 years, Audrey; his children of whom he was so proud, Rob Higgin (Sherrie), Barb Sutton, and Doug Higgin (René); his treasured grandchildren, Cheralyn, Mitchell, Mikayla and Johnathan. He is also survived by sisters, Elaine Case (Allen) and Jennifer Higgin, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his infant daughter Janice and his sister Kay Maxwell.

John was a prominent obstetrician and gynecologist in Calgary; and served for twenty years as Director of the OB/GYN Department at the Calgary General and Peter Lougheed Hospitals. A highlight of his busy career was the pre-natal care and delivery of identical quadruplet girls, all of whom thrived. He was offered a professorship in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Calgary and enthusiastically pursed teaching and mentoring medical students and residents from whom he received many honours as favourite professor.

He had many professional affiliations and his interest in urodynamics led to the establishment of the first uro-gynecology clinic in Calgary. He was widely published and became known throughout Canada and the USA for his work. He was also elected President of The American Urogynecologic Society, a unique honor for a Canadian physician.

John excelled in many diverse activities. He was an academic, an active sportsman, and a musician who was welcomed to entertain at any party with a piano. He was a devoted family man and a loving husband. He and Audrey shared a long and happy retirement, enjoying their travels and especially their winter home and many friends in Scottsdale, Arizona, where it was agreed by all, that John made the best margaritas. We will all miss him and his great sense of humour!

John’s Memorial Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Park Memorial, 5008 Elbow Drive S.W., Calgary, AB) Wednesday, November 7, 2018 at 2:30 p.m. Reception to follow in the Hospitality Centre at the Funeral Home. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. In lieu of flowers, a memorial donation could be made to a charity of your choice.

In living memory of John Higgin a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Park Memorial, 5008 Elbow Drive S.W., Calgary, AB T2S 2L5, Telephone: 403-243-8200.

  6. Beverley Smith :

I consulted Dr. Higgin (he was careful to make sure I did not think it was Higgins) over 25 years ago and still remember him. I was scared stiff about a medical problem I was having and he was amazing. Grandfatherly, so kind, so competent, and so reassuring. I think what he did for my psychologically was at least as important as what he did for me medically . A true gentleman of the profession and I am sorry not just for your loss but for society’s loss. Still I am sure that since he touched my life so profoundly, it was just his style to do so and he has left ripples of legacy everywhere.

  7. Sieglinde & Shawn Rooney :

We were privileged to know John and Audrey as friends and neighbours in their special home away from home in Scottsdale for over twenty years. Their special bond was as inspirational to many as was John’s legendary graciousness, friendliness, erudition, self-effacing bonhomie, kindness and supportiveness. We are better for having known John but so much sadder for hearing of his untimely death. Our memories of special times spent with John and Audrey will keep him alive and be forever fresh in our minds. Our deepest condolences to Audrey and family. May you feel grace and may the memories you gathered over the years be your constant companions as you go forward.

We only met Mr. Higgin once, at Doug and Rene’s, and were impressed with his kindness and friendliness. From reading his obituary, we’re sure he has set a very high standard for his children and grandchildren to aspire to, and from knowing Doug and his family we’re sure that you’ll all continue to make him proud. Our sympathy and prayers are with you all. Doug, Aunty Vic has always felt a special bond with you, with the tenderness she sees in you, and also with Barb though she only met her once.
    Thinking of you all.

  12. My name is Gilbert Parker. I’m a childhood friend of Mr. Higgins son, Doug. I dont recall meeting him but I feel in my heart that acknowledging his passing with my condolences is the least I can do. Doug is a good man and knowing that, tells me his father was the tree of goodness to sprout Doug. Bless all the Higgins in this time and I’m certain Mr. John Ross Higgin is in The Better Place.

Good Morning. We were sad to hear of Dr Higgin’s death. Have wonderful memories of being “the office nurses” for Buchanan, MacGregor, Higgin and Dockstedder, from 1976 to 1979. It was Quite the office!!!. What is amazing is that the 3 of us still get together regularly- 42 years of friendship – the result of the OFFICE.

Our sincere sympathy to the family- Jan, Sharon & Bev
