July 26, 1947 – Leoville, Saskatchewan
August 28, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

Albert, beloved husband, father, and friend to many, passed away peacefully at Dulcina Hospice on August 28, 2018 at the age of 71 years after a brief and courageous battle with cancer.

Albert was born in Leoville, SK, on July 26, 1947. He spent his childhood on the farm and as a young man moved to Whitehorse where he met and fell in love with Annemieke Vandenbeld. They married in Calgary on September 5th 1970 and settled in Bowness to raise a family, direct the church choir, drive truck, and work the steel yard. In the early 1990’s Albert started his own business as a handyman and painter- he could fix anything. He built relationships with customers and employees that he would maintain to his death. In 2002 he answered God’s call and was ordained a Deacon in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Southern Alberta serving in St. Bernard’s and Holy Name parishes. This was his true calling as he touched countless lives with his compassion, kindness, and amazing gift to be present and attentive to the suffering and needs of others. Albert loved to play guitar and watch his grandchildren in all of their activities. He cherished the annual family vacations to Penticton, BC. Together Albert and Annemieke travelled to Europe and the Holy Land, and embraced all the joys of life together. He will be missed by many.

Albert is survived by his wife, Annemieke Henri (nee Vandenbeld) of 47 years; son and daughter-in-law, Christopher and Elizabeth Henri; daughter and son-in-law, Nicole and Dihan Seneviratne; grandchildren, Douglas, Mark, and Katelin Henri, Amber and Alyssa Seneviratne; siblings, Cecil and Doug Sias, Rene and Gladys Henri, Denise and Brian Pedersen, Lisette and Paul Smith, Mariette and Rick Lemieux, and Lorraine Charbonneau.

Albert was predeceased by his parents, Edmund and Adrienne Henri.

Relatives and friends are invited to Prayers and Tributes at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Chapel of the Bells, 2720 Centre Street North Calgary, AB [1]) on Thursday, August 30, 2018 at 7:00 p.m.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Mary’s Cathedral (219 – 18th Avenue S.W., Calgary, AB [2]) on Friday, August 31, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. Reception to follow at the church hall.

Our hearts are saddened by the news of Albert passing. I will miss our occasional talks over the fence. So many interesting stories Albert and Annimeke have shared. So much neighbourhood history to tell. As long as I have lived in my home Albert has always been a larger than life precence in the neighbourhood. I don’t think there is a single person in this neighbourhood Albert did not impact in some way. We will truly miss Albert. Our deepest condolences to the Henri family for your tremendous lose.

What a peaceful death! Just three days prior to his departure, me and Anita held his hand for the final time, he uttered slowly, ‘ Anita and Jerry, I’m going to meet Jesus, my mission is accomplished here on earth’ We consoled him and prayed ‘Our Father and Hail Mary and Glory Be’ and surrendered all his suffering in the blood of Christ. Kissed his final time. We are deeply saddened at the sudden death of Deacon Henry. Deacon Henry, we have always looked forward to listening to your homilies, We always found to your insight impactful. We will miss Deacon Henry very much. Our deepest condolences and prayers to your grieving family.

Condolence from Fr. Alfredo S. Pereira on August 30th, 2018 1:58 PM

My dear Annemieke & Family,

Heart filled with sympathy at the sudden and untimely loss of your beloved, Deacon Albert Henri. He was a man of deep faith, courage and was a decent man. He was the deacon, that I was proud to work with as he was ordained a deacon during my tenure at St. Bernard and Our Lady of the Assumption parishes. He was held in high esteem by my brother and me. My brother, Fr. Mario Pereira, when he was visiting Canada met him in 2001 and said to him and I quote: ‘Deacon Albert! Your face reminds me of my late dad, Felix.’ Deacon Albert was a compassionate and humorous man. Many of us were touched by his life and his preaching. He will be sadly missed by us here on this earth but our faith assures us that we will unite with him God-willing, in the resurrection of the Lord! May his soul rest in peace. Dear Risen Lord! Console his family and all of us at this time. Long live Deacon Albert in our hearts!

Yours through Our Lady of Mt. Carmel,
Fr. Alfredo of JMJ.

The sincerity, the smile, and the “joy” and energy he used to conduct the services when I was present. My very sincere condolences to all the family.

Dear Annemieke & Family,
Just heard today about the passing of your husband, Albert. I was the Sacristan at Holy Name Parish. It was pure joy and pleasure to have served him and to have spoken with him many times. He was philosophical, kind, caring, had a great sense of humor, and was oh so calm. That is what I remember most about him. His calmness. His quiet strength. May you feel such strength in Christ within your pain and His comfort in knowing where your beloved rests: in Christ Light & Love.
