HENDERSON, Kenneth Stuart “Ken”

March 6, 1942 – Camrose, Alberta
October 23, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

Ken, beloved husband of Sandra Henderson (nee Rollo), of Calgary, AB, passed away on October 23, 2018 at the age of 76 years.

In addition to his loving wife, Sandy, Ken is also survived by his son Sean Henderson (Susan Boyer and Susan’s son Cody); his two step-daughters Susan Walls (Darryn Ritchey) and Lorrie Bailey; his sisters Betty Allen and Dorothy O’Donnell (Doug Bernard); his brothers Frank Henderson and Archie Henderson; grandchildren Tara Dubbin (Scott Dubbin), Catlin LaRocke (Kimmie LaRocke), Tiffany LaRocke (Jay Tumak), Joshua Walls, Taylor Bailey, Kyle Bailey, Kendra Henderson, and Katie MacLean; 10 great-grandchildren (soon to be 11); and numerous nieces and nephews and loving in-laws.

Ken was predeceased by his two precious daughters LaDean Henderson and Shannon MacLean; sisters Peggy Roselle, Beverley Thompson, and Shirley Manolescu; and brother Bobby Henderson.

Ken was a dedicated sports fan and, in addition to following the Flames and Stampeders, coached hockey and baseball for the Albert Park, Radisson Heights Community Association when his children were in their early years.  He also enjoyed playing golf and swung the club at every opportunity.

Ken was thoughtful, kind, and giving, and he adored his family.  His family was always his first priority, and he ensured that their needs were met prior to his own.

Ken was social and outgoing, and people were drawn to his kind and generous nature:  he made friends in every walk of his life’s journey.  His attempts to make people laugh never failed, and his signature wink and grin will be missed by all.

A Celebration of Life will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Deerfoot South, 12281 – 40th Street S.E., Calgary, AB) on Saturday, November 3, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. Reception to follow at the funeral home. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

In living memory of Ken Henderson, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Deerfoot South, 12281 – 40th STREET S.E., Calgary, AB T2Z 4E6, Telephone: 403-203-0525.

My deepest sympathy to the Henderson family. We grew up in Hillhurst a few doors down from Kenny. He was such a good looking cool guy and all the girls chased him. We had the pleasure of a nice visit with him at Doreen’s memorial and he was full of compassion and humor. You will be dearly missed Kenny. Stir up a little crap when you connect in your next adventure with all your loved ones waiting for you. A special hug to all of you from The Witherspoon Girls.

Sandy, I am so sorry for your loss. Ken was a wonderful friend to my then husband, Alain (Boyer) when they worked together at NOVA, and I’ll never forget some of the New Years Eve parties we shared during those years. I don’t know if you knew that Alain passed away from cancer in 2012, but I know if he were still here he would also be grieving the loss of his good friend, in spite of the fact we all lost touch. My deepest sympathies are with you and your family.

  25. My deepest condolences to my sister Sandy, niece Susan, and nephew-in-law Sean. As you know, Ken was much more than a brother-in-law to me. I was fortunate enough to be raised during my formative years in your home, although if memory serves correctly, I didn’t think so at the time. haha

I was 13 years old and thought I knew everything – well, in a way I still do, but at least I now realize that the older you get, the less you know. At any rate, a couple of years after Ken joined our family, my father passed away. I was 15 and devastated. I still am, but Ken stepped up to the plate for me, and he, along with our brother Duane, became my ‘father’ role models. Ken made darn good and sure that I towed the line, and I am who I am today because of him. He was always there to offer guidance, whether it was wanted or not, and his words were always full of wisdom and truth. They will remain with me forever. Thank you Ken.

I’m extremely grateful that I was able to make it to the hospital on the fateful day of his passing. The room was filled with family members when I arrived. We were all keeping an eye on him and chatting quietly among ourselves. At one point, someone (I don’t recall who) shared a funny story about him, and we all joined in and were talking about him with fondness and love, and he chose that moment (where no one was focused on him) to pass. It really didn’t surprise any of us, though, because he was like that – he always put his family first, and I know he just wanted to make sure we were okay. I do know, however, that he felt the immense love we lavished on him during his final hours, and for that, I will be forever grateful.

After leaving the hospital, as I was driving alone in my car to your house where the family was going to gather, I was overcome with an emotion that I hadn’t felt since 9/11. It was in that moment that I realized life was never going to be the same. There was going to be a new normal, and I felt an emptiness inside. My niece Krista’s poem from his service said it best – a link is now missing from the family chain. Family gatherings somehow just won’t be the same without him shaking his fist at us and cracking jokes with his signature wink and grin. There will definitely be a void, but Ken, if you can read this and I hope you can, I want you to know that we will always remember you as we try to move forward in our lives, and I will continue to strive to make you proud until we link up again.

    With all my love,
    Jackie

  26. To my Uncle Ken,

You always had a way of cheering me up whenever you spoke to me. I remember as a kid Mom and Rick brought me and Justin over to your’s and Sandy’s one night for a family dinner and I was in a grumpy mood. I dont remember exactly what I was upset about, but I do remember that you cared enough to take me downstairs in private by the bar in your guys old house and put a smile on my face with some mints and talked to a 12 year old like he was a grown up. You made me feel like you understood why I was upset. You always embodied a kind heart in my eyes and a strong soul, one that could brighten up any room. Ill never forget all the flag football games you came to watch me and Justin play growing up either. Im so thankful that I got to see you the day before your passing and that you were in good spirits around loved ones. I wont forget that hug you gave me and big wet kiss on my cheek and how you said I love you bud. I never had a Grandpa around growing up on either my Moms or Dads side, I always felt like you were a Grandpa to me more then an Uncle and hope that if you can see this message you know that. You will be forever missed in my heart Grandpa Uncle Ken.

    Love,

    Jarod
