June 21, 1934 – Calgary, Alberta
May 9, 2019 – Calgary, Alberta

Jim Hawkes of Calgary, AB, passed away on Thursday, May 9, 2019 at the age of 84 years.

A beloved husband, father, and grandfather, pre-deceased by his wife of fifty-six years, Joanne Hawkes. Jim is greatly missed by children, Terri Hawkes and Robert Hawkes (Susan Cullen); grandchildren, Andrew and Michael Hawkes, and Alexa and Jake Hawkes-Sackman; brother Roger (Lisa); brothers-in-law, Bill and Jim Herriot; and extended family and friends. Jim was predeceased by his parents, Amy and Fred, and his brothers Bob and Reg.

Jim was a native Calgarian who was a strong advocate for both Calgary and for sound and innovative national policies. He served the people of Calgary West as their federal Member of Parliament for more than fourteen years, and was honoured to hold the position of Chief Government Whip from 1988 to 1993.

Before entering politics, Jim’s passions for youth mentorship and basketball led to his first career with the YMCA in both Calgary and Montreal; he was also a star point guard at Sir George Williams College in Montreal. Jim managed Camp Chief Hector and later ran the counselling centres at both Mount Royal College and the University of Calgary. After earning his PhD in Research Psychology from Colorado State University, Jim taught in the Faculty of Social Work at the University of Calgary, running their graduate program. Jim was also an entrepreneur, starting and running successful small businesses. In retirement he treated golf and curling like jobs, immensely enjoying friendly competition with his long-time friends until dementia forced him into “full” retirement. A true renaissance man!

Jim loved spending time with his spouse Joanne, a strong supporter of the arts and of archival work at numerous Alberta museums. Joanne was Jim’s true love and partner in life, prior to her passing in 2013. Together they rejoiced and engaged in the growth and successes of their kids, grandkids, nieces and nephews. Friends remember Jim’s keen intellect, huge heart, sense of loyalty and gift of counsel. Colleagues and opponents alike regarded Jim as an honest, principled and compassionate public servant who was in politics for all the “right reasons”. Through a number of life’s challenges, Jim demonstrated tremendous resilience and most recently showed great strength and bravery in facing his journey with dementia, making the best of every day. Jim shared a joyful sense of humour with all, often delighting his caregivers until shortly before his passing.

A special thanks to family, friends, his companion Joanne, caregiver Alara and indeed all other caregivers who cared for Jim with love, dignity and humour. Jim/Dad/Papa will live in our hearts forever.

Those wishing to pay their respects in a visitation with family may do so at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Park Memorial Chapel (5008 Elbow Drive S.W. Calgary, AB [1]) on Monday May 13, 2019 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. A celebration of Jim’s life will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY on Tuesday, May 14, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. Reception to follow. Condolence from Deb Russell on May 11th, 2019 12:20 PM

I had the great privilege of being on Jim’s board of directors when he was an MP. It was an honour to “door knock” for him. I last saw Jim and Joanne at a function in 2009, and was pleased and surprised that he remembered me. He was truly one of the great ones. I am grateful to have known both Jim and Joanne, and send the deepest condolences to the family he loved so dearly.

Condolence from Cleo Kilroe on May 11th, 2019 7:50 PM

Two of my very favourite people…Jim and Joanne!
To Rob, Terri and families my sincere condolences. Forever remembered.

Condolence from Doug Lewis on May 12th, 2019 9:25 AM

To the Hawkes family: One of my most pleasant memories of serving as a Member of Parliament was meeting your dad. We served together from 1979 until 1993 in various capacities and my late wife Linda and I got to know your mother as well. We really enjoyed them.
Jim was the best Chief Whip I ever saw. He had a capacity for understanding people’s difficulties and working out solutions. He and I worked very closely and he
helped me solve government problems continually.
Caucus Chairman Gerry St. Germain, Jim as Whip and I as Parliamentary Secretary to Don Mazinkowsky knew or found out about most problems before they happened
and nobody got around us or through us because we shared information seamlessly.
He was a fine parliamentarian and a fine person.
You will miss him but you won’t miss what he must have taught you.
My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Condolence from Peter Whitenect on May 12th, 2019 9:42 AM

My fondest memory of Jim is the summer of 1957 when we both worked as senior staff at Kamp Kanawana, Montreal YMCA’s summer boys camp in the Laurentians. A bonding that has continued and memories that will never fade. Jean and I send our condolences to Rob and Terri and your families.

Condolence from Butch Nelson on May 12th, 2019 12:09 PM

Terri, Rob and family, I offer my condolences and prayers.
Jim and Joanne entered my life in the late 1940s. Jim at the old, old Calgary YMCA and then Camp Chief Hector. Joanne in the Eaton’s Good Deed Radio Club Choir on Saturday mornings. The friendship lasted through Sir George Williams, Colorado, UofC, getting Joe elected Leader and on and on. They were truly good persons who healed those they knew. I am thankful that I was blessed by their friendship.

Condolence from Reg and Heather Gates on May 12th, 2019 2:46 PM

Your Dad and our friend, Jim , was very much a part of our lives for over 60 years. Our first contact with Jim and Joanne was in Montreal ,as YMCA fellowship students at Sir George, then as young marrieds eating Tuna Casserole on a Sat. night! Our long distance friendship continued into celebrations of our 50th wedding anniversaries, and occasional visits as we both moved around the country during our careers, celebrating our children and grandchildren’s successes. We will always remember Jim as a great intellectual, and a very caring individual. He had a “Life Well Lived”

Condolence from David Filipovich on May 12th, 2019 3:38 PM

Rob and Terri,
Very sorry to hear the news about your father. It is always difficult losing a loved one. Losing a parent is particularly heartbreaking. Our thoughts and sympathies will be with you and your family in the days ahead. Take care.
David and Tania

Condolence from Ken Boutillier on May 13th, 2019 1:59 PM

Terry and Rob – I was very sorry to learn of the passing of your dad. As you know, he was a major influence on my life, as I suspect he was on many others. Jim was one of the most considerate and caring people I have known. He was decent, honest and principled and, as a politician, had an abiding concern with good public policy. Our world shines less brightly in his absence.

Condolence from Marty Niwa on May 13th, 2019 3:51 PM

My mother asked to pass along condolences from the Murray Niwa family, she was always appreciative of Jim visiting Murray when he was in hospital in Calgary.

Condolence from Hon. John McDermid, P.C. on May 13th, 2019 9:31 PM

Terri and Rob and family. I am so sorry I can’t be with you on the 13th and the 14th to say goodbye to my old friend and colleague, Jim Hawkes. We sat together in the House of Commons for almost 15 years and my wife Elayne and I became very good friends with Jim and Joanne. Jim, Joanne and Terri came to my riding to support me and was always there to help me in Ottawa. We worked together on the Rt. Hon. Joe Clark’s Leadership campaign which was a wonderful experience for both of us. After we left politics, I always visited Jim when I was in Calgary which was no nearly enough. We played golf together, we enjoyed each others company and the last time I saw Jim, I picked him up at the curling rink and we had a fabulous lunch together. I kept in touch through Facebook and Rob always kept me informed. I will miss Jim as I miss Joanne. They will forever be in my thoughts. A great Parliamentarian, a gentleman, a wonderful Dad and Grandfather, Jim Hawkes was one of a kind.
My condolences to all and much love coming your way in this sad time.

Condolence from John Anderson on May 20th, 2019 6:17 AM

Very grateful to have had the valuable life experience to have worked with a man of the many talents, beliefs, and depth of character Jim Hawkes showed us all. No wonder so many were so loyal to Jim. I can only imagine how these attributes played out in his time with basketball. Subtly, dynamically, and powerfully I think.
