Phyllis Katherine Hart of Calgary, passed away on Monday, April 9, 2012 at the age of 97 years.
Phyllis was born in Stettler, AB and grew up in Gadsby, AB. She began her working career as a school teacher. After a few years of teaching she went to work as a telegraph and then teletype operator for the C.P.R., working in Medicine Hat in the winter and at the Chateau Lake Louise in the summer. She always said her happiest years were working at Lake Louise where she climbed virtually every mountain in the Lake Louise area with the famous CPR Swiss guides. She finished her career at the CPR as a communications instructor and customer liaison in Calgary. Following retirement, Phyllis enjoyed world travel, hiking in her beloved mountains, volunteering for Meals on Wheels and being an active member of Scarboro United Church. She remained an active member of the CPR Pensioners Club, was a life member of the Alpine Club, and participated in the annual Calgary Tower Climb for the Alberta Wilderness Association, which now has a Phyllis Hart award presented annually to the eldest female climber. Phyllis lived at The Fountains of Mission Seniors’ Residence for the last few years where she had many friends.
Phyllis will be missed by niece JoAnn Steinke and nephews, Bruce McFadzean (Sherry), Robert McFadzean (Marit), Brian McFadzean (Joanne), David Langridge (Nadine), and Jim Langridge (Leslie); and many grand and great-grandnieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her mother and father, Ella and Hedley Hart, and sisters Eileen (Langridge) and Mildred (McFadzean).
