HARRISON, Joan Marion

July 17, 1932 – Lethbridge, Alberta
April 19, 2019 – Calgary, Alberta

With profound sadness, her family wishes to announce that Joan Harrison of Calgary, AB, died peacefully on Friday, April 19, 2019 at the age of 86 years after a brief illness.

Joan was born in Lethbridge to H. Farrant and Nellie Smith (Sellens) during the depths of the Great Depression, the family resided in Monarch, Diamond City, Lethbridge, High River and finally Calgary during her childhood. As a young woman, Joan moved to Toronto in the early 1950’s and worked for The Royal Bank and Imperial Oil, and most importantly, Toronto is where she met her future husband Frank. They were married in December, 1956 and in 1960 moved to Oakville, Ont. A family soon formed and Joan became a homemaker, and in short order found herself caring for a very busy family of six. The family returned to mom’s roots by moving west in 1975 and Joan resided in Calgary until her passing. Always a very practical and industrious person and with her family grown, Joan returned to the workforce in the late 1980’s. This required that she return to school to learn computer operation and upgrade her office skills to adapt to a vastly changed work environment after over 25 years as a homemaker. Joan worked for NovAtel in Calgary until retiring.

Joan and Frank travelled extensively during the early years of their lengthy retirement, and as they aged they settled into a comfortable and independent retirement lifestyle. With the passing of Frank, Joan realized that she would be most comfortable in a vibrant, accessible social setting, and in 2015 sold her home and moved to the Amica at Aspen Woods Seniors Residence, where she resided until her passing. Joan made many friends at Aspen Woods, and she thoroughly enjoyed her years there.

In her views of contemporary society, Joan was always a very progressive woman; she was a very early adherent to yoga – practicing and teaching by the late 1960’s, and she was a great believer in equality between all people – no matter their gender, color, religion, orientation, livelihood or background, she eschewed making personal judgments and was accepting of everyone she met. She lovingly and completely embraced an evolving and very diverse extended family in later years, with her core values of respect, acceptance and equality never being more prominently displayed than as she aged and as her experiences broadened.
Joan is survived by her son Paul (Karen) of Calgary, daughter Lisa (Max) of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, son David (Tiffany) of Calgary; and her nine grandchildren Lucas, Ethan and Ana Mangelsdorf, Mikena, Robert and Justin Peterson and Matthew, Hayley and Evan Harrison. Joan was tragically predeceased by her infant son Farrant in 1963 and son Michael in 2007. She was also predeceased by her parents Nellie (1966), Farrant (1974), husband Frank (2014) and dear brothers Robert (1993) and Gerald (2017).
Joan accepted the end of her life with great equanimity and she actively reflected on her long and happy life with a strongly evident sense of comfort and peace. She spent much of her final weeks comforting her family and making her passing easier on us, that was our mom!

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

To Joan’s amazing family I am sending huge love. My sister Barb, her husband Larry and I were fortunate to spend time with her on some of her last days and she never ceased to smile and make us feel welcome and loved. What an incredible mom, wife and neighbor to us growing up. She will be missed.
