HARPER, Donald

May 5, 1930 – June 21, 2019

It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Donald Harper of Calgary, Alberta on Friday, June 21, 2019 at the age of 89 years.

Don was born on May 5, 1930 to John and Marion Harper of Calgary. After graduating from Western Canada High School, he followed in his father’s footsteps and became a business owner. His first business was Harpers Hardware and then went on to sell fishing and hunting gear and small fishing boats. His success in retail business grew into Harper’s Marine and Harpers Ski West. Don had a passion for sports. He also enjoyed later in life ocean boating and sailing. He always made himself available to fix everyone’s motor boats at Sylvan Lake, where we had a cabin many years. Don was involved in many service clubs and was on the Stampede driving committee for many years. He also was a volunteer driver in the 1988 Winter Olympics.

Don is survived by one son Robert (Marilyn); five daughters, Caron Smed (John); Janice Poettcker (Allan); Julie Lawson; Theresa Gilker (Ross); Nancy Harper (Brian); nineteen grandchildren and twenty-four great-grandchildren; brother Stan Harper (Bev); two sisters, Joyce Bennett and Millie Bodtker; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Don was predeceased by his loving wife Mary-Ann; brother Jack Harper, sister-in-law Marie Harper; and son-in-law Brian Ponting.

Those wishing to pay their respects may do so at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Fish Creek, 14441 Bannister Road S.E., Calgary, AB) on Monday, July 1, 2019 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

    Cheryl Spelliscy (Harper)
Rob, Caron, Janis, Julie, Terry & Nancy. So sorry to hear of Don’s passing – and my thoughts and prayers go out to you and your families. I have such wonderful memories of Uncle Don – including all the summers up at Sylvan Lake, skiing, and often the open houses your parents often had on Christmas Eve. Uncle Don had such a fun spirit and a great chuckle. I know you will all miss him dearly and will hold all your wonderful memories deep in your hearts. With deepest sympathy. Cheryl

  4. Thinking of all of you today as you gather to celebrate Don’s life. He had such a welcoming, wonderful exuberant personality. Lots of fun memories of learning how to water ski at Sylvan Lake; thanks to the patience of Uncle Don teaching all us kids. On Christmas Eve the Harper house was full of family and neighbors and he made the evening so special with his reports to the younger children of Santa’s journey down from the North Pole. He was blessed to have such a warm and loving family and will be missed.
