January 26, 1953 – Regina, Saskatchewan
June 20, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

Myrna Harden, beloved wife, loving mother, cherished grandmother, loyal friend, gregarious neighbour, devoted daughter and sister, ended her life at home in Calgary, on Wednesday, June 20, 2018 at the young age of 65.

Myrna was born January 26, 1953 to Julius and Tegwen Orthner in Regina, Saskatchewan. The second oldest of four siblings, Myrna grew up on a farm in Raymore, Saskatchewan. She loved her parents endlessly and cared for them her whole adult life.

From an early age, Myrna wanted to help people. She left Raymore in 1971 a bright-eyed and ambitious young woman, eager to bring healing and rehabilitation to those in need. She went on to pursue a diploma in Physiotherapy at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon. She ultimately moved to Calgary where she completed her practicum and met and married her husband Rick.

Her enthusiasm and commitment to the service of others and her devotion and genuine interest in everyone around her, never faded. Despite trauma, loss, heartbreak, injury, and chronic pain, Myrna was a woman of endless energy, with a strong sense of duty. She worked tirelessly to ensure that the people in her life were cared for. Since childhood, she possessed that contagious Orthner smile and an entertaining sense of humour. Known for her enthusiasm in conversation, even with total strangers, Myrna made everyone feel like family.

Her signature gift of joyful service, shown through her constant smiling, laughter, and unsolicited advice, will never be forgotten.

Myrna is survived by her four beautiful grandchildren (Jude, Oliver, Elliot and Zander), her son Paul (Eva), her daughter Heather (Arif), her husband Rick, her brother Gary (Gail), her sister Kathy (Larry), her sister-in-law Lynn, her nieces Jennifer, Lauren, Julie, Angela; her nephews Michael and Kevin; and her feisty mother, Tegwen. She was preceded in death by her niece Leanne, brother Lloyd, and father, Julius.

A Celebration of Life will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (82 Crowfoot Circle N.W., Calgary [1]), on Saturday, July 7, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. Reception to follow.

If it were up to her, you would all be invited. Please feel welcome to join us.

Dearest Rick, Paul and Heather,
I am so saddened to hear of Myrna’s passing. I remember meeting her when I was just six years old, she pregnant with Heather and my mom pregnant with Robert. Who knew they would become best of friends. My only comfort in knowing that her life ended with a heavy burden on her shoulders is that she and my mom are together, smiling down on us with those signature smiles of theirs. I hope that this thought may bring all of you a little comfort and peace during this most difficult time. My dad sends his deepest sympathies as well.

My deepest condolences on the passing of Myrna. I have known her for many years through her work. She was a kind, compassionate, and dedicated physiotherapist. She made a difference in many lives. We shared laughter and tears. Her smile could light up a room in a way that was uniquely hers.
Pain had stolen much joy from her, but what it did not steal was how she smiled and lit up when she spoke of her family. Her greatest joy. It still shone through. I hope the memories of the countless times you made her smile and fill with joy will bring some comfort to you. My deepest sympathies. You are in my prayers.
