HARCSA , Julius (Jules)

December 11, 1945 – Neszmély, Hungary
December 3, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

Jules Harcsa, loving and devoted husband of Eva and cherished father of Zsuzsanna Middleton (Trever) and Emese Smith (Christopher) passed away peacefully with his loving family at his side at the age of 72 years.

Julius was born on December 11, 1945 in the small Hungarian town of Neszmély. His early childhood was typical of most small-town boys, where many hours were spent playing by the Danube river. Julius met his beloved wife Eva as a child in Neszmély where they were neighbours. Julius arrived in Calgary in 1957 after leaving Hungary with his parents and brothers during the Hungarian Revolution of 1956. He attended Western Canada High School, and the University of Calgary. As a young man, Julius went back to visit Hungary and became reacquainted with Eva. Their friendship grew into love and they were married in 1969.

From an early age, Julius had a strong understanding of mathematics which lead to various careers in finance and management. He worked at CP Rail, Royal Bank and Shell Oil. However, Julius also loved to work with his hands so he decided to attend SAIT and successfully completed his journeyman ticket as a sheet metal mechanic. He used his practical and design skills while working at Arpi’s Industries and Prudential Steel. Julius worked on some of Calgary’s landmarks such as the courthouse building, Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium and McCaig Tower. This occupation he proudly held until his retirement in 2010.

Julius developed a passion for cooking while watching food shows on TV and became an incredible cook. Some of Julius’ other passions were driving, enjoying the outdoors, hiking, travelling, writing, golfing and spending time with his family. He was an amazing dancer and passed on his love of dance and music to his daughters and grandchildren. An avid sports fan, Julius loved watching hockey and football and was a strong supporter of the Calgary Stampeders and the Calgary Flames. As a proud member of the Hungarian community, Julius held various positions such as an instructor for the Palotas dancers, committee member for the Hungarian Veteran’s Association, and administrator for the Bartok Hungarian dancers.

Julius will always be remembered for his sense of humor, ease with people and the ability to make all around him laugh and smile. He was a modest, kind, caring and loving man who was ready and eager to help others. Julius loved his daughters and grandchildren greatly and never hesitated to express his tender affection towards them. Julius lives on in the hearts and memories of everyone who knew him.

He leaves behind his wife, Eva Harcsa; daughter, Zsuzsanna (Trever) Middleton and their children Anthony, Taylor, James; daughter, Emese (Christopher) Smith and their children Michael and Evelyn; mother, Ida Harcsa; brother, Csaba Harcsa (Lisa); sister-in-law, Alice Harcsa; nieces, Lenke (Nick), Ildiko, Dori and Orsi and her children Lilla, Luca, Joci; nephew, Peter (Christina) and their children Indra, Chander. Julius is predeceased by his father, Julius Harcsa and his brother, Thomas Harcsa.

A Celebration of Jules’ Life will be held at the home of Zsuzsanna and Trever on Sunday, December 9, 2018 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. For details regarding the Celebration, please contact: Condolences may be forwarded through

Julius was diagnosed with lung cancer in August 2016; he managed the disease with dignity, courage and strength. The family would like to give thanks to the many healthcare workers that cared for and supported Julius: doctors Boles and Morris, and the dedicated staff at unit 47 at the Tom Baker Centre and the compassionate staff at Sarcee Hospice.

In living memory of Julius Harcsa, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Fish Creek, 14441 Bannister Road S.E., Calgary, AB, T2X 3J3, Telephone: 403-256-9575.

  6. Dear Emese,
I was so sorry to hear of your father’s death. Even when one knows this is coming the sadness and grief are not lessened. I’m sure your father was comforted by the presence of all of you, both during his illness and at his passing, and I hope that you are comforted by the fact that you were all with him. I think of Jules, Eva and the rest of you as you have been at all the Smith get-togethers. Jules was always so friendly towards me. It was so evident he enjoyed being at a party with Eva,family and friends. I hope over time that your grief will be lightened by the many wonderful memories you have of your father and your life as a family. He sure loved his grandkids. 8. Sending love and prayers to the entire family. I remember Jules as a fantastic neighbor always ready to help out. Loved talking with him through the fence. Even joked about how we would make a hole in the fence so we would play on both sides. I remember him being a loving father and husband. He was a hard worker yet still made time for his family. My heart goes out to you all in this difficult time and accepting this loss. He is in a better place and will always within your hearts.

For as long as I have known Jules he has always been a loving and caring man. Rarely getting angry, always showing compassion and affection towards his family. This was never more apparent than the evening of December 1st. Eva was getting ready to leave long enough to go home and care for her cats and the house. Jules had his eyes closed, like he had most of that day. She leaned in to tell him that she loved him and that she would be back. His eyes opened, he looked at her with the love that he always had. Jules reached up and pulled her close, giving his wife a kiss goodbye. This was his last goodbye as his eyes closed for the last time. True to his life this was his last action. One of caring and love. Two days later he took his last breath surrounded by his Mother, Brother, two daughters and his loving wife.

Thank you for everything you did and everything that you were.

    You will be missed.
