HANSON, Marietta (nee MacDonald)

January 9, 1928 – Alhambra, Alberta
July 7, 2019 – Calgary, Alberta

Marietta (Mickey) Hanson, dear wife of Henry Hanson (deceased), mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away ever so peacefully on Sunday, July 7, 2019 with her children at her side.

Born and raised on her beloved Heatherdale homestead at Alhambra, Alberta, she spent her childhood on the farm wrapped in Scottish family traditions. It was there that she developed her enduring loves: family, animals, gatherings, bagpipes, Highland dance, neighbours, sports, and children. As a young woman, Marietta moved to Red Deer to work. She played softball for the Red Deer Buffaloes and was proud of her years with the team. This is where she picked up the nickname Mickey. She met Henry and in 1948 they were married. They traveled extensively around Alberta and Saskatchewan with Henry’s job at Gulf Oil Canada (BA). After short stays in many small towns, she was happy to settle in Calgary in 1959. Marietta dedicated her life to her family. She enjoyed her children and nothing made her laugh more than having them around sharing stories and jokes. For thirty years, she also provided dayhome care for children of working parents. Strangers became like family. She was delighted to care for many of her grandchildren, too, which made for a deep connection across a new generation. Her kitchen door was always open. She adored her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, always being there for them when they needed her the most. Mickey loved her Charleswood home, residing there independently until after her 91st year. Her neighbours were an extension of family, providing her with a social network, friendship and support throughout the years. A special thank you to Andrew Marshall for all the kindness he selflessly extended to our mom. Mickey enjoyed knitting. Each of her grandchildren always had a warm, handmade sweater for winter with toques and socks to match. She always had a pet, walking her dogs on the hill behind her home, rain or shine. She proudly wore her kilt to the Robbie Burns function each year, tapping a toe to the bagpipes and clapping along with the Highland dancers. She was a true, proud Scotswoman.

Mickey is survived by her six children and their spouses, Ron (Srunn), Patrick (Donna), Rick (Kim), Lorraine Beaudry, Len (Brenda), and Tom (Linda); eighteen grandchildren; twenty-seven great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; brother Murray Phillips (Lucille); sister Jeanette Godkin; brother-in-law Ron Hanson (Kathleen); and many nieces and nephews.

We love you Mom. Thank you for giving so much of yourself to all of us. Rest easy in heaven.

A Memorial Service will be held at a later date. Condolences may be forwarded through www.McInnisandHolloway.com.

In living memory of Marietta Hanson, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Crowfoot, 82 CROWFOOT CIRCLE NW, CALGARY, AB T3G 2T3, Telephone: 403-241-0044.

We enjoyed her stories, especially about Alhambra and the many Hogmanay parties! She was very special and will be missed by many.
    “How are you today Mickey?”
“Mean and miserable so you’d better watch out!”
But the big smile and open arms always gave her away.

Mrs Hanson took care of our two most precious children and we couldn’t have asked for someone to love and protect them more than she did. When we were on our way home from the hospital with our day old second child we had to stop and show her off to Mrs Hanson after all she was family to us. No one gave a better hug than her and my heart is broken today thinking that I got my last hug when we visited her in January. Thanks for sharing your mom with so many very fortunate families. She is and always will be a very special lady to my family ♥️

  11. Very sorry to hear of Mickey’s passing. We got to know her not long after moving to Calgary in 1995, after we got our first puppy. We had countless visits in the park behind our houses and marveled at her running up and down the hill faster than most of the kids in the neighborhood (until just the past few years). She will be very much missed.

    Dearest Cousins,
I just read of the passing of your wonderful mother and my all-time favourite aunt. It’s difficult to express how special she was and how much she meant to all who knew her, such a beautiful balance of strength and kindness… a true champion of children, animals and all innocent beings. I will forever cherish the chats we shared by telephone after returning from the reunion and the inspiring way she had of always lightening my day. The love she shared so selflessly is reflected in your integrity, your capacity for love, and the way you care for your children and your grandchildren. Our hearts are with you in this time of loss and we share in your sadness. I know there is a beautiful joyful Hanson reunion taking place on the other side now and Mickey is celebrating her homecoming. She will never be forgotten.

We lived in Calgary from October of 1984 until February of ’87 and I was 8 when we arrived. I was an anxious kid who was really struggling socially. Great Aunt Mickey (Hank’s older sister Anna was my grandmother) is the person I most fondly remember from my time there. She and Great Uncle Hank welcomed us into the family fold as if we had lived there our entire lives; they were always so kind and warm… and funny, so, so funny. I remember family gatherings at their house being filled with all the right things—great people, lots of fun and laughter, good food and so much love.

My fuzzy memory seems to recall the great amusement of my eight-year-old self when one evening where, as a game of Monopoly or Trivial Pursuit was being played, a whoopee cushion appeared and started making the rounds… among the adults! (Being a boy under 10 at the time, of course this is what I remember!) Alas, it did not survive the evening as someone’s husband Kim or Kym proved to be the final beneficiary of its cheeky humour. I also remember becoming fast friends with two big, friendly black Labs, one of whom I think was named Velvet.

Reading everything else here, it seems that despite the more than 30 intervening years, my perception of Mickey is, and has always been, an accurate one. That sort of authenticity and genuineness of heart and character are also such admirable traits that continue to be in far too limited supply. While our time together was not as long as I would have liked, it is very clear to me, as I hope it is to her friends and family who read this, that Mickey had a lasting and very positive impact on me at a time when I really needed it. And I am forever grateful. Thank you, Great Aunt Mickey.

Rick and the rest of the Hanson family I was sorry to hear of the passing of your mother.
I very much enjoyed learning about who she was – the person that gratefully became your mother.
I trust you will have so many lovely memories and pictures to share. I will always have a wonderful vision of your mom and her beautiful amazing hairstyle.
When you have her Celebration of Life you will be able to share her contributions to your own lives and reminisce with the greater family and friends circle.
    With love Shairole Henchall

    Lorraine, and all the Hansons
Mickey was an angel on earth, I have so many special memories of her always welcoming new people and making them feel loved. Laughter was common in her home and she was a caring and dedicated Mom to all six of her exceptional children. She must be meeting so many people in heaven and boasting of her amazing family. May your memories keep you company during this difficult time.
