HANK, Bernice Maria

September 22, 1927 – Daysland, Alberta
January 5, 2019 – Calgary, Alberta

Bernice Hank of Calgary, AB passed away on January 5, 2019 at the age of 91 years.

The meaning of being a mother is virtually endless. A mother is a selfless, loving human who must sacrifice many of her wants and needs for the wants and needs of her children.

Bernice’s life was all about motherhood. Unexpectedly her mother died when she was only 13 years old. As a result she was thrust into a mother’s role at a very early age helping her father tend to her 6 younger siblings. At 20 years of age she married Charles Hank and they spent the next fifty-six years together before Charlie’s death in 2006. Those fifty-six years were filled with numerous stories of hardships and accomplishments, of joy and of sorrow. Her early years of marriage were spent moving from town to town throughout Alberta and Saskatchewan supporting Charlie as he toiled in the oil patch and raising a family that seemed to grow with each move. By the time they left Estevan, SK for Calgary in 1973 the number of children they were raising had swelled to 10, the youngest three being special needs meaning she was still mothering well into her latter years.

Bernice was a devout Catholic and her faith was paramount in helping her cope with and overcome many of life’s obstacles which included a battle with breast cancer at age 42, the loss of two of her ten children over the years and the death of her husband in 2006.

But through all the trials Bernice loved life. She was an avid bowler and bowled in a women’s league in Calgary well into her 80’s. She loved playing cards, any game will do! Her garden was a special place where she could dig in the dirt and nurture her flowers, roses being her favourite. She had the most gorgeous yellow roses. And she had a wonderful talent for sewing which comes in very handy when one is raising a family of 10 children.

Bernice was kind, compassionate and loving as she dedicated her life to being a devoted wife and exceptional mother. Her final two and a half years were spent at the Lake Bonavista Retirement Village where she enjoyed fireside chats with new friends, playing cards in the afternoon or just relaxing in her room reading the newspaper or watching TV. Those two and one half years in this relaxing, peaceful and supportive environment were a just reward for the many years she spent caring for others.

At the time of her death she had numerous children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren at her bedside to send her off. A tribute she richly deserved. Left to celebrate her life are her remaining eight children, ten grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren soon to be eleven.

Bernice is survived by her brothers, Melvin Schneider (Rose Marie), Joseph Schneider (Shirley), and Irvin Schneider(Catherine); sisters, Genevieve Dunnigan (Dick), Geraldine Rymarchuk, Jean Arsenault (Art); sister-in-law Mary Schneider; Daughters, Roseann Trump (Brian), Darlene Herauf (Brian), Susan Ziriada (Peter), and Faye Hank; sons, Brian Hank (Jackie), David Hank (Debbie), John Hank, and Larry Hank; grandchildren, Leesa Trump, Sheena Roche (Jay), Melanie Hval (Jeff), Ryan Herauf, Craig Herauf (Courtney Bell), Matthew Ziriada (Liona Gnai), Samuel Ziriada (Ashley), Rachel Ziriada (Mikhail Miller), Tracie Heier (Kreston), and Lindsey Rae Hank; and great grand-children Kairell Trump-Hayes, Kingston Roche, Kamorah Roche, Olivia Hval, Alora Hval, Nolan Hval, Reyah Herauf, Theodore Herauf, Nora Herauf, and Alana Ziriada.

Bernice was predeceased by her husband Charles Hank, son Gary Hank, daughter Bonnie Hank, and brothers Leander Schneider and Donald Schneider.

REST IN PEACE BERNICE.
