February 3, 1919 – North Petherton, Somerset, England
May 26, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

This cheery dear passed on to join her husband, Jim, on Saturday, May 26, 2018.

She lived up to her name, Unity, symbolizing the reunion of her parents after WW1 through to being the proud matriarch of her own family, always thrilled to bring us all together. During her long and adventurous life she wore many hats; English farmer’s daughter, World War II children’s nurse, wife, mother, doctor’s nurse, choirmistress, travel consultant, world traveler, and devoted grandma. After the war, Unity and Jim with their two young children immigrated to Canada in 1952, driving the non-existent Trans-Canada highway from Toronto to Calgary where they made their home and became proud Canadians. Here she worked at the Children’s Hospital and a doctor’s office before joining Jim at H&M Travel. Their home was always open to anyone who needed a friend or a place to stay. Over the years, many expats lived in their basement while establishing their new lives. She kept busy with needlepoint and knitting (we all remember the Christmas when she knitted nosewarmers for the entire family!), bird-watching, gardening, card games with her many friends (gin and tonic in hand) and enjoyed day trips to the mountains to refresh her soul. In their retirement, Unity & Jim spent many enjoyable weeks on road trips exploring North America and organized fun-filled get-aways for their friends in the Southwood Seniors, as well as travelling to most continents, but always returning to her home in the foothills within sight of her beloved mountains.

Unity is survived by her two children Carol (Gordon) Fuller and Keith (Cathy) Hampshire; her four grand-children, Gwenda Lorenzetti, Theresa Lorenzetti, Christian (Megan) Hampshire and Laura Hampshire; and her three great-grand-children, Mark Heritage, Rowan Hampshire, and Elliot Hampshire.

She was pre-deceased by her parents Archie Clarke and Olive Bowerman; her husband of sixty-four years, Jim Hampshire; and her grand-daughter, Melissa Foursha.

A service to celebrate her ninety-nine years on this earth will be held at St. Paul’s Anglican Church (7 Sunmills Green S.E., Calgary, AB) on Friday, June 15, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. with an informal reception to follow in the church hall.

Thanks to the caregivers at Southwood Extended Care Centre for their compassion and thoughtfulness over the past four years. If friends so desire, in recognition of her love of children and travel, memorial donations may be made directly to Dreams Take Flight (Calgary International Airport, P.O. Box 102, 2000 Airport Road N.E., Calgary, Alberta, T2E 6W5) Condolences may be forwarded through

Condolence Messages

  1. Mrs. Hampshire was the nurse at my physician’s office many, many years ago. As a young and anxious new mother, a call to Mrs. Hampshire and I was given the advice I needed. It was she who said she expected the lump on our baby girl to be a hernia. She was always so kind and so generous with her knowledge, I have never forgotten how fortunate I was to have Mrs.Hampshire giving me the support I needed with my daughter who had some minor health challenges. Via con dios Mrs. Hampshire

  6. I have just found this on the internet, while researching the family tree. My mother, Mary Wilson nee Dawson was a cousin of Unity’s, although she always called her Joan. Her mother was Uncle Archie’s sister, Snowdrop Elise Clarke. We were wondering last year if Unity was still alive; sadly we just missed her! My mother will be 99 in April this year. The Somerset genes are clearly good ones! Our condolences – albeit very late.
