HALLETT, Robert William (Bill)

April 10, 1914 – Claresholm, Alberta
February 5, 2017 – Calgary, Alberta

Bill Hallett, beloved father of Elizabeth Retzer, John Hallett, and Bob Hallett, passed away on Sunday, February 5, 2017 at the age of 102 years.

Bill Hallett was born April 10, 1914 in Claresholm, Alberta. He moved to Calgary to attend Mount Royal College boarding school, Crescent Heights High School, and obtained his formal education at SAIT in Electrical Engineering Technology. He later earned his Journeyman Power Systems Electrician’s certificate while working for the City of Calgary Electric System.

Bill attended Central United Church, where he met his bride, Victoria (Tory) Scott; they were married in March of 1941. Bill joined the RCAF during WWII and was posted to Port Hardy on Vancouver Island, BC, as a radar and communications specialist. His daughter Elizabeth was born in Vancouver while he was serving on the Island. After the war, Bill and Tory lived in Calgary, on 7th Street NW before building their life long family home across from Rosedale Elementary School. Bill’s family continued to grow with the addition of two sons, John and Bob. He returned to the City of Calgary Electric System where he then worked for over thirty seven years.

Bill’s life revolved around Central United Church where he was a member for nearly eighty years. He also attended the Wild Rose United where he participated in senior’s activities.

One of Bill’s fondest interests was Ham Radio; his call sign was VE6RQ. Bill and the boys spent time participating in “Boy Scout Jamborees of the Air” and “Transmitter Hunts.”

During his retirement, Bill enjoyed skiing and traveling with Tory in their motor home and internationally. He vacationed for many seasons at Mara Lake, BC, sharing his love of boating and water skiing with family. After Tory passed away in 1998, Bill continued to live in his family home, with the support of family and friends, until the age of ninety-five, when he moved to assisted living at Scenic Acres Lodge until age ninety-nine, then to the Colonel Belcher safe living unit, where he passed away.

Bill is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth and Walter Retzer of Calgary; his sons and daughters-in-law, John and Jackie Hallett of Airdrie, AB, and Bob and Anne Hallett of Calgary; twelve grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren.

Bill was predeceased by his wife Tory of fifty-seven years.
