HAGEL, Joseph “Joe” John

November 14, 1921 – Beiseker, Alberta
August 29, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

Joseph John Hagel, who resided for the past seven years at Prince of Peace Manor, passed away peacefully at the Peter Lougheed Centre on Wednesday, August 29, 2018 at the age of 96 years.

Joe was born in Beiseker, where he lived almost all of his life, and met the love of his life, Doreen (nee Perks). They shared fifty-two years of marriage, raised six children, and operated Hagel’s Hardware for forty-three years. Joe was strong in his faith and his love for Doreen. His family is happy that, after mom’s passing seventeen years ago, they are together again in the arms of God.

Joe was a man of dignity, who treated others with respect. He enjoyed a good game of cards, especially when graced with the joy of unbridled laughter. Joe’s top priority was his family and friends. He was very proud of his children, four grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

Grandpa and dad, we will miss your generous soul but rejoice that you are now where you want and deserve to be.

Joe is survived by his children, Glenn and Karen Hagel of Moose Jaw, SK, Lorne Hagel and Nancy Greenaway of Cloverleaf, MB, Terry and Anne-Marie Hagel, Diane Hagel and Jack Herron, and Lynn Hagel, all of Calgary, AB, and Maryann and Kevin Wiens of Lions Bay, BC; grandchildren, Kristin and Lawrence Ator, Meredith, Chloe, and Rachel Hagel; three great-grandchildren, Juliet, Nora, and Dexter Ator; sister Julie Perks of Three Hills, AB; sisters-in-law, Pansy, Joyce and Theresa Hagel.

Besides his loving wife Doreen, Joe was also predeceased by six brothers, Aloys, Matt, Felix, Manny, Lawrence, and Albert; three sisters, Rose Mattern, Margaret Saunders, and Marie Funk.

Relatives and friends are invited to Prayers and Tributes at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Chapel of the Bells, 2720 Centre Street North Calgary, AB,) on Monday, September 3, 2018 at 7:00 p.m.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Mary’s Catholic Church (Beiseker, AB) on Tuesday, September 4, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. Graveside Service to follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Beiseker, AB. Reception to follow at the Beiseker Community Hall. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the charity of the donor’s choice.

In living memory of Joseph Hagel, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Chapel of the Bells, 2720 CENTRE STREET NORTH, CALGARY, AB, T2E 2V6, Telephone: 403-243-8200.

  22. Dan, Tatsiana & Raissa :

Joe Hagel was all about family and friends.
He loved his family and he loved to be with his friends. With every festive holiday and with every family birthday, his house would be crowded. The tables would be filled with food and the laughs would be plentiful. The more family and friends over, the more Joe was in his glory.
He loved to listen, but at the same time, he could tell a good story.
And when our bellies were full, and we ached from laughing, out came the cards.
A nickel to play, with more laughs to follow, you knew you were going to stay.
It was always hard to leave Joe’s place, but when you did your belly was full, you had a doggie bag to go, and fond memories that couldn’t be replaced.
    Thank you Joe.
Thank you for your kind heart and your generous soul.
Thank you for your hearty laugh and your thoughtfulness.
We will miss you Joe, but the warm memories that you left us with, will never go.

  23. It is hard to feel sad about 96 years of life lived so well, however there is always that sadness when a loved one passes. I remember Joe very well in his hardware store. He always seemed to be very happy! Farewell friend.

  24. Terry & Noni Schmaltz :

What a blessing our good Lord has bestowed on this earth by sharing 96 Years of Joe J Hagel. As a youngster growing up in Beiseker, I was a regular customer at “Hagel’s Hardware” using my earnings from delivering Newspapers to buy my hockey sticks there. Joe and Doreen were always so helpful in helping me choose the right B’day/Mother’s Day/Christmas gifts for my Mom. The last time I saw Joe was at the Beiseker School 100 year Reunion, and not having seen him since 1964, other than moving a little slower he was the same old friendly, joyful, happy Joe.

Our thoughts and prayers to all of Joe’s family, that you will rejoice in the memories and find strength and comfort in the Lord.

“May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and by his grace gave us eternal encouragement and good hope, encourage your hearts and strengthen you in every good deed and word.” (2 Thessalonians 2:16-17)

I spent most of my life in Irricana / beiseker. Joe was my across the street neighbor for 13 years of those years. He was always so happy & positive. When I sold my house to move to cranbrook Bc, I was pretty sad to leave the area that was my hone. He made me feel better by telling me he had relatives who live in cranbrook and that I would really like cranbrook. he was right and I have crossed paths with his nephew Dale. I’m heart is sad to hear that Joe has passed but I’m happy for him to be with Doreen once again
