June 27, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

With heavy hearts, the family of Lionel Alecio Guidi, announces his passing in Calgary, AB on Wednesday, June 27, 2018 at the age of 89 years.

Lionel was born in Summerland, BC to his emigrated parents, Pietro Nello Guidi and Ersilia Pellini. In his 20s, he came to Calgary to work and start his life with his beloved wife, Ann May (Marie) Nubson. They married in April, 1956 and spent the following sixty-two years together raising their family.

Throughout Lionel’s life, entertaining was a passion and he was a talented musician. He was a bandmate to many and loved to bring smiles to people’s faces. He was also proud of his time of service as a Second Class Petty Officer in the Naval Reserve with HMCS Tecumseh and was honored as a lifetime member.

Lionel is survived by his children, Dale Guidi (Leslie), Keith Guidi, Kathleen Hamnett and Grant Guidi (Lisa), and ten grandchildren. He also had numerous special nieces and nephews that were very close to his heart. While Lionel loved and was proud of all of his grandchildren, he was fortunate to have enjoyed many years of watching sports and fishing with his grandsons, Colin, Nicholas and Paul (Jennifer). He was predeceased by his sisters, Sarah (Bob) Scriver and Theresa (Walter) Olsen; and nephews, Rick Olsen and Pat Scriver.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church (1600 Acadia Drive S.E., Calgary, AB) on Wednesday, July 4, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. Graveside Service to follow at Eden Brook Memorial Gardens. It is with a heavy heart that I send my condolences to your entire family. I am sorry to hear of the passing of Lionel. I have many great memories of Lionel as I was a close friend of the family growing up across the street as a child in the Glendale community. I fondly remember going fishing at Bearspaw Dam and also a weekend camping in Chain Lakes. Lionel will be sadly missed by family and friends. My thoughts and prayers are with the entire family as you go through this trying time.
    Peace be with you.

To Marie, Keith, Dale and the rest of the Guidi family.
We are very sorry for your loss. Lionel was an absolute prince of a neighbor who always had a quip or a story for us and kept us laughing during our front yard conversations. Being next door, we were fortunate to hear Lionel’s music on occasion which was always a joy and inspiration.

  11. Grandpa was truly one of a kind. I will miss coming to visit and seeing grandpa standing in the front yard watering his plants. He cared about everyone and didn’t hesitate to pick up the phone to ask how everyone is doing. It is unfortunate his illness stopped him from wetting a line this year. Thank you Grandpa for the times we shared together. God bless.

  14. My great uncle Li! A man that could change the whole mood of a room in an instant.

You are an icon in this family. I will never forget you playing the trumpet at my hockey games when I was younger. You have always supported me and showed interest. The time you gave me meant so much. You made me laugh at every encounter. I hope heaven enjoys you as much as we did.

I know you were 89…..still not easy.

    Love and respect Uncle Li

  15. Sincere condolences to the entire Guidi family with the passing of ‘Uncle Li’.
The memories I hold nearest and dearest are first, of his uncanny mastery of the game of Smear (aka Schmier), at which he was also a great teacher. He taught us all and we had many, many hours of enjoyment. Secondly, Christmas Eve’s, when he was the only guy I ever knew that could transform a room full of folks into human instruments and form his own ‘big band’.
RIP Uncle Lionel, sorely missed and never forgotten

My wife and I were very sorry to hear of Lionel’s passing. Our family will always remember on that Christmas day, years ago, when Ray was sick in bed with the flu. Lionel dropped by and wished us all a Merry Christmas and then went in the living room and started to play the piano. He brightened our day and gave us a wonderful memory of a great man. Ray will miss his phone calls and catch-up chats. Bless you all and may all your memories comfort you in this time of need.
