GRIFFITHS, Robert “Alan”

August 3, 1928 – Lethbridge, Alberta
April 9, 2017 – Calgary, Alberta

Alan, beloved husband of Hedwig “Hedy” Griffiths (nee Pipke) of Calgary, AB, passed away on Sunday, April 9, 2017 at the age of 88 years.

Alan was born and raised in Lethbridge. He was the first of two sons born to Robert Daniel and Lillian Margaret Griffiths. Alan’s first trip to Waterton National Park was when he was two years old; it continues to be a special place for us all to this day. Alan followed in his father’s path and began working for the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1946. He worked in many small railway stations throughout Southern Alberta before settling back in Lethbridge. After meeting Hedy on a blind date they were married in 1953. The family grew with the arrival of Glenda and Elaine.

A promotion with the CPR moved the family to Calgary in 1966 where the family made its home. He retired from the railway in 1986. Many of his favourite activities were camping, road trips to the coast, holidays and, above all, spending time with his family.

Alan was a kind and generous man who enjoyed the company of others; he was a friend to all. He had a great sense of humour and loved a good joke. Alan was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.

Alan is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Hedy; daughters, Glenda (Lawrence) Block of Calgary and Elaine (Aidan) Colleran of White Rock, B.C.; grandchildren, Carmen (Brent) Magneson, Jason Block (Erin), Stefanie Coutu and Tessa Coutu; great-grandchildren, Camden Magneson and Brinley Magneson and brother, Douglas (Georgina) from Chilliwack, B.C.

He will be dearly missed and his life cherished.

Funeral Services will be held at Woodcliff United Church (5010 Spruce Drive S.W.) on Saturday, April 15, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.
