GRAYSTON, Richard (Dick) Walter

July 5, 1944 – Vancouver, British Columbia
April 18, 2019 – Calgary, Alberta

It is with broken hearts that the family of the late Richard Walter Grayston of North Vancouver, BC, announces his passing. Richard passed away on Thursday, April 18, 2019 at the age of 74 years in Calgary, AB.

Richard was born in Vancouver, British Columbia on July 5, 1944. Richard received a BA of Commerce from the University of British Columbia in 1966, an MBA from the University of Chicago in 1969, a Ph.D. in Finance and Economics from the University of Chicago in 1971, and has been a certified general accountant since 1977.

Richard was a self-employed business consultant and capitalist with more than 40 years experience in financial and economic consulting and public company management.

Outside of his passions in business, Richard was an avid walker, and was often found at a local coffee shop reading on his Kobo. He was also a rugby fanatic.

Richard was very colourful, quick witted, had a great sense of humour and was often heard saying “I resemble that remark” after someone made a compliment. He was a caring, loving and supportive father and grandfather.

Think of him as living in the hearts of those he touched, for nothing loved was ever lost and he was loved so much.

Leaving to mourn with a lifetime of wonderful memories are his 2 daughters; Chantelle Grayston, Calgary AB, and Chelsea Chester (Kris), Calgary AB, his 6 grandchildren; Austin Grayston, Jayden Grayston, Sophia Grayston, Ethan Chester, Alexus Savidant, and Chazz Savidant, Calgary AB, his 2 sisters; Julie Collins (Glenn), Vancouver BC, and Barb Laurillard (Derek), Vancouver BC, his brother; Kevin Grayston (Julie), North Vancouver, BC, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and business colleagues.

Richard was predeceased by his parents Eric and Nora Grayston.

Those wishing to pay their respects may do so at a Celebration of Life reception at the Seymour Golf and Country Club, 3723 Mount Seymour Parkway, North Vancouver, BC, Canada, V7G 1C1, on Friday May 10th, 2019 at 1:30 pm.

In living memory of Richard Grayston, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Crowfoot, 82 CROWFOOT CIRCLE NW, CALGARY, AB T3G 2T3, Telephone: 403-241-0044.

It is with great sadness that I offer my condolences to the familys for their loss. He was always kind and caring to me. Some one I could always go to for advice and was always met with a compassioned down to earth answer. Always quick to put a smile on my face. Many of the lessons he taught me have stayed with me to this day.
    He will be missed.

  7. I just heard from Chantelle about Dick’s tragic accident and passing. Carl’s and my deepest sympathies go out to Chantelle, Chelsea, Julie, Barb, Kevin and the entire Grayston clan. Although our lives took vastly different paths after our days together at UBC, Dick remained a good and loving friend. He will be fondly remembered and greatly missed.

It is with shock and much sadness that I just heard today about Dick’s passing! He was a great guy from a wonderful family and my condolences go out to you all.
Dick was one of my closest friends at UBC and we shared many of life’s experiences , most of them I remember fondly to this day. It seems some of us just all met for a small reunion a short while ago which was great fun! It was a time to reflect our views that the older we got the better we were.

  9. I have just heard of Dick’s passing and I am shocked and saddened. I first met Dick at Sir Winston Churchill High School but it was at UBC where we were both members of Beta Theta Pi fraternity that we really connected. We had some wonderful times at the frat parties and down at the Fraser Arms. We did study a bit, but Dick out “degreed” me 3-1! Great memories just the same. Dick was a good businessman and a true friend. I will miss him.

  10. My deepest sympathy goes out to Dick’s siblings, Julie, Barb & Kevin; his daughters, Chelsea & Chantelle; and the entire Grayston Clan, in the unexpected loss of their dear Brother/Father. The attached photo was taken during the cleanup after our 2008 wedding in San Francisco, and I think it really captures the Dick we all knew and loved. He will be sorely missed. R.I.P. my friend.
