May 15, 1952 – January 30, 2018

Kip, beloved husband of Mary Gothard (nee Archibald), of Calgary, AB, passed away on Tuesday, January 30, 2018 at the age of 65 surrounded by the love of his family.

Kip’s family were very important to him – he loved them dearly. He loved his family life, the family camping trips and other vacations, and all the fun they had together. He was so so proud of his beautiful daughters, Chloe and Nicola.

Kip was born in Drumheller. After living in various places in Alberta, his family settled in Calgary where Kip attended Lord Beaverbrook High School where he was part of a large group of friends that still party together.

Kip and Mary met in 1982 where he played squash at the Woodbine Racquet Club. Kip loved sports and participated in many sports and outdoor activities including baseball, slow pitch, squash, skiing and weightlifting.

Kip’s career was working with kids at William Roper Hull Home and Fish Creek School. He was passionate about helping kids and positively influenced many lives. His most important career was a trail blazing full-time stay-at-home Dad for daughters, Chloe and Nicola. He played Barbies, mastered pony tails, arranged play dates, drove to many, many dance classes and was always there for his girls.

Kip’s passion was motorcycle touring on his beloved Harleys. He was proud of his Harleys and personalized each of them with chrome and unique “Kip” touches. He traveled many miles on the highways of Alberta, BC, and the US. He made several trips to the Sturgis, South Dakota motorcycle rally, and one summer traveled north to Whitehorse. His motorcycle buddies were very special friends.

Besides his loving wife of 33 years, Mary, Kip is survived by daughters Nicola, Chloe (Rob) and grandson Kade; siblings Gerry (Don) and Lance (Shirlee), parents-in-law, Cameron & Florence Archibald, siblings-in-law Kim (Judy), Colleen (Brian), Robin (Chris), Craig, and Diane (Max); and numerous special cousins, nieces and nephews.

Kip was predeceased by his father, Jim, his mother, Rhoda, and brother, Randy.

A Celebration of Life will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Fish Creek, 14441 Bannister Road S.E., Calgary, AB) on Tuesday, February 6, 2018 at 2:30 p.m. Reception to follow at the funeral home. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Crohn’s and Colitis Canada. The family wants to thank all the doctors and medical staff who took care of Kip during his lifetime. A special thanks to the staff at the South Health Campus Hospital whose compassion and devotion were such a comfort to Kip and the family last week.

In living memory of Kip Gothard, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Fish Creek, 14441 Bannister Road S.E., Calgary, AB Telephone: 403-256-9575.

My deepest condolences to you Mary, Nicola, and Chloe. I had the great pleasure of seeing Kip’s joy and passion as a stay-at-home Dad when I taught Nicola in Kindergarten and grade one. He was, without doubt, my number one volunteer on a field trip! It was an added pleasure to work with him as a colleague at Fish Creek School; he had such a great way with the kids and was always so proud of his girls as he kept me up to date with their accomplishments. You are in my thoughts and prayers at this difficult time.

Condolence from Sharin Mackie on February 4th, 2018 7:04 PM

Dear Mary ,Nicola, Chloe and Rob,
It is with much sorrow that we learned of Kip’s passing.
We first met in high school when Kip first moved to town. In those good old days many of us forged our friendships at Bayview [ Glenmore Dam] over the campfire to the tunes of Johnny Cash, Ian Tyson, BB King and many other musical greats. We sang our hearts out every week and dreamed our dreams, set our goals and just shared our friendships and comradery.
Kip had the fiery red hair and blazing blue eyes then and he could party but even then he had a gentle soul and a sense of wanting to make the world a better place. He did. He was so proud of his family! I loved that he was Mr. Mom for the early years and he was darn proud of it. It shows his devotion and willingness to do whatever it took to have the best family experiences he could give you. The memories you have can never replace the man but they will become a way of keeping Kip alive in your hearts forever. My heart breaks for you all. Hopefully you can take some comfort that Kip prepared you all so well for what can be a wonderful world and provided you with an abundance of love, respect and zest for life. Mary, sadly retirement for you and Kip was not to be. You are in our thoughts and prayers. Rely on your family and friends as much as you can, they will give you strength.
Love and Hugs to you all,
Leif and Sharin

My heart is saddened by Kip’s passing. I will miss the many years of hearing Kip call me “Cous” and laughing stories of adventures surrounding family and friends. I know he is somewhere riding with Randy or maybe hooking up with Billy and looking down on us and especially proudly with love at his Mary, Chloe and Nicola.

Condolence from Susan Gowen on February 8th, 2018 2:04 PM

For Gerry,
With Kip gone recently and Randy earlier, you’ve now lost two brothers. Two of your own generation gone from your Gothard family, as well as your parents. I hope this doesn’t leave you feeling alone in the world, that your husband (and kids ?) will provide the support that one needs in this sad situation. Further, I hope that you and Lance are close and will get closer. Keep good, close ties with family and friends because you never know when you’ll lose someone else. Those years have begun. I wish you well. From 50 years ago…
