GILLIS, William Stanford

September 13, 1930 – Dominion, Nova Scotia
October 16, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

Bill, beloved husband of Kristin Savoie of Calgary, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 16, 2018 at the age of 88 years.

Bill was born in Dominion, N.S and joined the Merchant Navy at 15 years of age. He served in World War II and later joined the Royal Canadian Navy to serve in the Korean War. Bill sailed around the world many times over, and loved to tell tales of his adventures in exotic ports. After his time as a sailor, he moved to B.C. where he worked as a construction foreman on projects such as the Bennett Dam (1961-1967) and the Mica Dam (1967–1973). He was married to Elsie Flora Gillis until her passing. He then met Kris Savoie, and they spent many wonderful years in Bill’s retirement fishing, camping, traveling the world, and taking care of the acreage in Beaverlodge, AB he loved so much. They lived in Grande Prairie, AB for eleven years before relocating to Calgary, AB in 2017. A self-made man, Bill was fiercely independent, loved to play crib, tell a good joke and was known to enjoy an occasional rum and coke.

Bill is survived by his wife, Kris Savoie, and her seven children, Theresa (Ray) Masse, Bill (Dawna) Savoie, Emelie (Darrel) Quennell, Rick (Monica) Savoie, Denis (Joanne) Savoie, Marc Savoie and Andre Savoie; sixteen grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; as well as numerous nieces and nephews in Nova Scotia also survive him.

William was predeceased by his first wife Elsie; three sisters, Kathleen, Theresa and Joan; and four brothers, Calvin, Charles, Les and Harold.

If friends so desire, donations may be made to the charity of your choice. As per Bill’s wishes, there will not be a service and cremation has taken place. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

In living memory of Bill Gillis, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Crowfoot, 82 CROWFOOT CIRCLE N.W. CALGARY, AB, T3G 2T3, Telephone: 403-241-0044.

My condolences Kris to you and your family. I remember my father (Buster) sharing some nice stories about when Stan visited many years ago. There weren’t many dull moments when they were together. They had a mutual love and respect for one another. He was a good man, I thought highly of him. His memory is with us today as are our prayers with you and your family.
