GIBSON, Suzanne Byrl “Suzy”

May 10, 1953 – Calgary, Alberta
September 22, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

Suzy of Calgary, AB, passed away on Saturday, September 22, 2018 at the age of 65 years.

Suzy was a Calgarian born and bred. Although life took her elsewhere, to Hamilton, ON where she completed her PhD – or to Gwanju, Korea, where she was an Associate Professor for several years, she always returned to her beloved Calgary. She was proud of being a second generation Calgarian and a third generation Albertan. Prior to completing her PhD in 18th Century English Literature at McMaster, Suzy did a BA in English, a BA in History, and an MA in English Literature at the University of Calgary. She taught for many years at the University of Calgary and at Mount Royal College before taking up the position at Chonnam National University in Gwangju. After her retirement she took on an active role in the Sunnyside Housing Coop where she had lived for many years. Suzy was an academic to the core, never too sick to have a discussion about the finer points of grammar or usage. She was also so much more. Her career included a stint as an airplane dispatcher and she had an impressive knowledge of car engines. She played a mean guitar, was an avid pool player and was always ready for a song or to bust out the dance moves. Suzy was a force of nature, larger than life, and always the life of the party.

She will be greatly missed by her family, Greg and Judy McCaffrey and Phillip McCaffrey, as well as her extensive family of special friends.

A musical gathering to celebrate and remember Suzy will be held at The Block Kitchen and Lounge (2411 – 4th Street N.W.) on Sunday September 30, 2018 at 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Alberta Cancer Foundation, c/o Tom Baker Cancer Centre, 1331 – 29 Street N.W., Calgary, AB T2N 4N2 Telephone: 1 (866) 412-4222. Condolences may be forwarded through

In living memory of Suzanne Gibson, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Chapel of the Bells, 2720 CENTRE STREET NORTH, CALGARY, AB, T2E 2V6, Telephone: 403-243-8200.

Condolence Messages

  1. I was so very sorry to hear the news of Suzy’s death. She was indeed a force of nature–and enormous fun at baseball games, at Morgans for the Sunday blues jam, at the Kensington Pub anytime, at so many other places too. Unlike many people who are good at being “the life of the party,” Suzy was as good at listening as she was at talking, and she understood a very great deal in her warmly human way. She was as kind as she was fun, and she was there for people in the tough times as well as the good times. When my second marriage was falling apart a couple of decades ago, for example, Suzy remained best friends to my ex–but remained warm and friendly and supportive to me as well. She was a truly good soul in a world that has too few of them.

  3. I am honoured to have known Suzanne. My connection is through a very special jam group, and hearing her belt out the blues always made me happy. She is also the first person I know to have an Apple Green kitchen!

  6. I met Suzy at the Calgary Folkfest, discovered we both lived in Sunnyside and rapidly became good friends. I have so many fond memories of Suzy, sharing a G&T and intellectual conversation on warm summer evenings, dancing and singing like a wild thing at any opportunity, and her warmth and empathy in hard times. She will be much missed, my heart goes out to her family and friends for your loss.
