GELHORN, Laura

April 4, 1924 – January 3, 2017

Laura Gelhorn passed away peacefully at her home in Calgary at the Chateau Renoir Retirement Community at the age of 92. Laura was a loving mother to daughter Lynda and son-in-law Bryan Allan and to sons and daughters-in-law Don and Alana and Bruce and Cindy, and loving grandmother to seven grandsons and twelve great-grandchildren. Laura grew up on the family farm in Arnprior, Ontario, the second youngest of nine children. She met her future husband, Gordon Gelhorn, in Ottawa where he was stationed with the RCAF. Laura’s marriage to Gordon in 1946 brought her to western Canada where they resided in Lavoie, AB, Dauphin, MB, Saskatoon, SK, Edmonton and Calgary. Laura carried with her, throughout her life, the friendships she made along the way. Laura was a social being who loved to dance and play cards, and enjoyed the comradery of curling, bowling and golf. Laura fondly remembered her years of work and her co-workers at Woodward’s Department Store. Laura was predeceased by Gordon, her husband of 66 years, in 2012. As per Laura’s wishes, there will be no funeral service. The family will gather at later date for a celebration of her life. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the charity of your choice.

Condolence Messages

  1. Hello to you all from Kingston, On. I am so sorry to hear the loss of Aunt Laura. As a grand-daughter (John Colemans daughter) Edit Coleman (Clarke); I have many memories of family gatherings and the excitement when Aunt Laura and Uncle Gordon were coming out all this way to join in the fun. The last time I saw Aunt Laura was when Granny died; it was a difficult time for me but was happy to see that the bonds of family never break.
Please accept my sincere sympathies to all of Laura and Gordons loved ones. May you always remember her smile and the sparkle in her eye. Sending love and light.

  3. As a vital family member , I know aunt Laura will be missed by us all. We always had so much fun and made wonderful memories every time she and uncle Gordon came east. I will miss our phone calls and catching up on family news. The Clarke family is together again and I know there will be dancing and card games being played. For that my sadness is eased as I hope yours will be too.
    Condolences to you all.
