GARDNER, Antoinette Marie (Annette) (nee Grift)

August 21, 1935 – Swan Lake, Manitoba
May 22, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Annette Gardner on Tuesday, May 22, 2018 in Calgary, Alberta.

Annette was born on August 21, 1935 to Antoin (Tony) and Florence Grift on the family farm in Swan Lake, Manitoba. She left home early to study nursing and soon earned her LPN and began her career and travels, working in hospitals in both Canada and the United States, coming home as often as possible. She met and married John Gardner, settling eventually in Alberta where they had their two children. Annette was a very involved and caring parent, she loved children and was always encouraging and supportive of all of their needs and interests. Later divorced, she was a strong and capable single parent and worked tirelessly to care for her family. She was supported by her sister Rose and her brother-in-law Vince Pezzella and was blessed to expand her family with their two children Aldo and Carol. She decided to continue her nursing career and graduated from Mount Royal College with her RN. She was hired by AADAC Renfrew Recovery Centre and had a career working in Addictions Nursing for twenty-two years. She was a proud member of the AUPE Negotiation Committee for many years and was blessed with the friendship and respect of many of her colleagues. She never stopped learning and advancing her career with seminars, courses, and graduated Critical Care Nursing at the age of 60. When Annette retired, she began her life as a proud grandmother to Grace, Smith, and Hutton and proud great-auntie to Lauren, Kendra, and Jason. Family and friends were the strength on which she founded her life and she will be sorely missed.

Annette leaves to mourn her passing her sister Rose Pezzella and brother Don Donaldson; her children Wendy (Gardner) Shannon and Layne Gardner; and her grandchildren, Grace, Smith, and Hutton Gardner. She was predeceased by her parents, Tony and Florence Grift, siblings Bill Grift, George Grift, brother-in-law Vince Pezzella and sister-in-law Mildred Donaldson.

Memorial Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Fish Creek, 14441 Bannister Road S.E., Calgary, AB) on Wednesday, May 30, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. Reception to follow at the funeral home.
