FRONTAIN, Elsie Honora (nee Aucoin)

September 24, 1929 – Belle Cote, Inverness County, Nova Scotia
January 23, 2019 – Calgary, Alberta

Elsie, beloved wife of Gilbert Joseph Frontain of Calgary, Alberta, passed away peacefully Wednesday, January 23, 2019 at the age of 89 years.

Elsie was born one of eight children of Lucy Anne and John Aucoin, in Belle Cote, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. A woman of deep faith, she lived her life open to whatever call God made, and through her, His touch was felt by many, friends and strangers alike.

A lifelong learner, Elsie pursued a career in teaching; from one room schools in Nova Scotia to adult training, church catechetics, and to family history lessons told in her many stories. In recent years, Elsie was encouraged to share her Acadian heritage by writing her memoirs for publication. She humbly accepted the challenge and marvelled at the significance others found in her “little” stories. She was a voracious reader and crossword puzzle fan, conferring daily with her daughter Diane and sometimes long distance with her life long friend Shirley, to find the words.

Elsie was creative, and found her gift through watercolour art. Her many beautiful paintings, which she always downplayed, remind the many who received them of her humble and loving heart.

At peace in eternal life, Elsie (Memere) also lives forever in the hearts of her four children: Denise (Gary MacLean) of London, ON, Richard (Kelly Frontain) of Calgary, AB, Diane (Grant Deveson) of Calgary, AB, Jeannine (Sterling Ashbee) of Sydney, AU, and six cherished granddaughters Holly, Julie, Carolyn, Rachel, Bridgette, and Jaclyn.

She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Gilbert, one brother, Richard Aucoin of Waltham, MA and numerous nieces and nephews in Canada and the United States.

A special thanks to Dr. John Faul and staff for their compassionate care and unfailing attention to Elsie’s health over the years, to the staff of Unit 68 South Health Campus Hospital and to the visiting Palliative Home Care nurses.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Albert the Great Catholic Church (10 Prestwick Drive S.E., Calgary AB), on Wednesday, February 27, 2019 at 11:00 am. Reception to follow in the church hall. Interment will be held in St. Michaels Cemetery, East Margaree, NS in the summer 2019. In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes memorial donations to any charity of choice. Condolences may be forwarded through ww.mcinnisandholloway.com.

In living memory of Elsie Frontain, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Deerfoot South, 12281 – 40th STREET S.E., Calgary, AB T2Z 4E6, Telephone: 403-203-0525.

  15. Uncle Gil, Denise, Richard, Diane and Jeannine,
We are never prepared to say goodbye to our loved ones. Knowing that we will all be together brings some comfort, but while we wait our turn, our memories are what we have. The smell of fresh baked bread, mackerel on the grill, lobster feasts with all the family. The way Aunt Elsie could eat a lobster and leave nothing but the shell! Music, stories to share and laughter was always a part of the gathering.
Kent and I send you our deepest heart felt condolences.
Aunt Elsie and dad are now catching up on everything.

  20. My sincere condolences. Elsie and I had a loving, respectful relationship in Halifax in the 1950’s. It did not come to fruition due to religious differences. Nevertheless, my love of Elsie has never diminished. It is with no surprise that her wonderful qualities and values she had as a 25 year old have blossomed into your family in Calgary!
May she be secure when she is returned to her beloved Acadie!
