FRIZZELL, John Bentley Haldane (Hal) B.Sc., B.Ed., M.D., C.D.

August 23, 1942 – O’Leary, Prince Edward Island
March 17, 2019 – Calgary, Alberta

Hal, beloved husband of Beverley Frizzell (nee MacIsaac) of Calgary, AB, passed away on March 17, 2019 at the age of 76 years.

Hal was a very intelligent, caring, and determined person, and he absolutely adored his wife and family.  Wherever she went, he was usually always by her side. He sometimes reflected on when he first met her in church, when they were preschool age, and how she had pretty ringlets and freckles.

In his teenage years, he spent three summers in Alberta working on the railway, building bridges, and was an employee of the Swift Meat Company.  As a young man, he pursued Bev and succeeded in winning her heart.  They settled down in a tiny home while he taught high school in O’Leary, P.E.I.  When sons Greg and Geoff were small, he realized he wanted to do more, and they all relocated to Halifax where he went to Dalhousie University to become a doctor.  He excelled in physics, mathematics and chemistry and was offered a scholarship in math.  Ingrid joined the Frizzell team during this time period.  While in university, he sold Fuller Vacuums at night.  He then joined the Canadian Military MOTP programme while in university to help pay his way.

After finishing his education, we moved to CFB Borden, and Dwight was born.  The family moved several times, to CFB Borden, Ottawa, P.E.I., then again to Ottawa and CFB Borden.  While in Ottawa, he worked at the National Defence Medical Centre and later at the National Defence Headquarters.  He also travelled to Cairo, Egypt with the United Nations.

He was so intelligent that when the Military sent him to learn French in St. Jean, Quebec, he picked it up and was completely bilingual after six weeks.  Apparently he started to dream in French.

After leaving the military the early 80’s, he relocated the family to Didsbury, to be closer to his parents in their later years, and his many siblings, whom almost all had relocated to Alberta.  Rachel arrived not long afterward, to complete our party of 7.

No matter where we lived, he always made sure that we spent our summers in Prince Edward Island, so we would always have a sense of roots and connections with the MacIsaac clan and other extended family.

Hal practiced medicine and helped so many people in Didsbury, Red Deer, Edmonton, and ultimately Calgary, where the family eventually relocated in 2000.  He continued to practice and help others until the day he left us.  He was clearly meant to be a doctor, he was always helping and putting others before himself.

He had simple needs – to be with Mom, always by her side, his children, and his grandchildren.  He so enjoyed and looked forward to his weekday morning breakfast dates with Mom.  He loved getting together with the family and he certainly would have loved it if we all moved home again.  He took such pleasure in his grandchildren, and spoke proudly of them all often.  If any of his children needed anything, he was there in a heartbeat.  He would go to the ends of the earth to help each of us; he often did.  He put everyone else’s needs above his own.

There are three words that sum up exactly who he was and what he cared about:  Family, Faith, Strength.  Those of us who are lucky to have had him in our life will feel a void forever.  We know we will see you again, but we wish you could have stayed longer.  We will love you and miss you forever.

He is survived by his loving wife, Bev, his children: Greg (Roxie) Frizzell, Geoff Frizzell, Ingrid (Gord) Dunn, Dwight Frizzell, Rachel Frizzell; and grandchildren: Katie Weeks and Lucas Frizzell (Leduc), Dru and Evan Frizzell (Bowden), Natalie, Shelby, and Grant Dunn (Calgary); also survived by his brother Robert (Lolita) Frizzell and sister Georgie McKechnie and countless nephews and nieces.

He was predeceased by his parents Stirling and Letitia Frizzell, brothers Alexander, Samuel, Kaye, Golding, and Delmar Frizzell; sister Devona, Helen Clark; sister-in-law Freda Frizzell, and brothers-in-law Norman MacIsaac, Roy MacWilliam, Jack Clark, and Len McKechnie.  He was also predeceased by his father-in-law Ralph MacIsaac and mother-in-law Shirley MacIsaac; nephews Robert Frizzell and Norman MacWilliam, and grand-niece Crystal MacIsaac.

Those wishing to pay their respects may do so at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Deerfoot South, 12281 – 40th Street SW, Calgary AB) on Thursday, March 21st, 2019 from 7:00 p.m to 8:30 p.m.

Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Deerfoot South, 12281 – 40th Street SW, Calgary AB) on Friday , March 22, 2019 at 10:30 a.m. Reception to follow in the Hospitality Centre at the Funeral Home. Graveside Service to follow at Rocky View Garden of Peace (Hwy #1 East at Garden Road).  Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.
