FRASER, Mark Jonathan

March 10, 1981 – Calgary, Alberta
August 18, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

There once was a beautiful boy, he came into this world too soon, so tiny and feisty. He shone so bright, loved fiercely, laughed loud. He was kindness and beauty, always in motion, teasing, funny, handsome and smart, he loved his family – he was our light.

He lived out loud and for a time he found happiness, he was joyous, always helpful, always kind and quick to hug you tightly and assure you of his love. Thoughtful with his words and generous with his affection, his smile lit up the sky when he was with his son and he loved us all so deeply.

With this beautiful soul also came something not so light, something he struggled with and fought as hard as he could to tame, he tried with all his strength to win. This is hard to write, hearts are breaking and dreams will not come true, addiction came slowly and crept into his life and took him from us. It moves slowly, addiction does and it is sly, it changes form and changes people, but addiction doesn’t come alone. Addiction slid in when he was trying to understand his deeper pain, a struggle that brought depression and anxiety. We gathered together, we tried to form a plan, to break its cycle. He fought but he was tired, he hurt, he could no longer find the light – he didn’t think he could be fixed.

He will always be our beautiful boy; his love and laughter live on in our hearts, our memories and deep in our soul. We love you to the moon and back.

Mark, our shining comet, peacefulness surrounds you now, sleep my baby, and sleep well.

We will always be here for you, together we will help to raise your beautiful boy; you are his angel now, watch him grow, we remain behind: Moms (his name for me), Joddi Melan, Stepdad, Brian McManaman; his son Dayton; his brother Lucas; sister-in-law Jaymie; nephews Nealen and Simon; sister Page; Dayton’s mom Korrie Burke; his father Joe Fraser; step-mother Shawna, Baba and Dido and Grandpa Joe as well as many, many, many wonderful aunts, uncles and cousins.

Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in support of mental health or addiction recovery, there are many trying to fight these diseases. There is no shame in mental illness nor in addiction recovery. It takes so much strength to ask for help. Please if you need help, seek it, please, everyone deserves a hand up. So, for our son, who always hugged with strength, hold your family close and love them fiercely.

In living memory of Mark Fraser, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Deerfoot South, 12281 – 40th STREET S.E., Calgary, AB T2Z 4E6, Telephone: 403-203-0525.

The obituary that you have written is one of the most personal and beautiful that I have ever read – what a tribute to your son. I am so sorry and heart broken to hear about this. I only knew Mark for a short time when he was staying with his dad and my aunt Shawna. He was probably 14. I still remember him listening to ‘Informer’ by Snow on a loop.

It’s funny I always remembered that and even though I never saw him for years afterward (last I saw him was at Luke’s wedding) I occasionally wondered what he was up to.

    My most heartfelt condolences,
