FOX, Shirley Alice (nee Davies)

April 26, 1923 – Daly, Manitoba
August 13, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

Shirley Alice Fox passed away peacefully on August 13, 2018 at the age of 95 at the Agapé Hospice in Calgary, AB.

Shirley was born on April 26, 1923, on a farm near the town of Rivers, MB, to George Lewllyn and Janet Margaret Davies. Shirley was a talented artist and started oil painting when she was 12, she continued painting until she was 94. She painted many commissions and won viewer’s choice award at North Hill Mall in 1999. Shirley loved playing sports; she rode her horse on the farm every day, played softball, and hockey in the Ladies Leagues while working in Winnipeg. She took one year of nursing at Portage La Prairie; however, due to eczema she was forced to quit. She decided to move to Calgary in 1949 and in 1950 she rode her horse Socks in the Calgary Stampede parade. She soon met her husband Gordon; they were married on February 21, 1953. Together they raised their two sons, Bob and Dale. They shared their passion of competitive curling, golf, and travel. She was lucky enough to have had three holes in one, and played her last round at the age of 92. Shirley and Gordon travelled extensively to many places including: Singapore, South Africa, Switzerland, Austria, Indonesia, France, Italy and Australia. She was also a Charter member of the Calgary Winter Club. Shirley taught millinery at SAIT from 1960-1968 and canvassed for the Heart and Stroke Foundation for many years. Shirley has always had a wonderful sense of humour, at eighty-three years of age performed a stand up comedy routine at the Palliser Hotel for the Ladies of the United Alberta Nursing Association.

She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Bob and June and Dale and Peggy; grandchildren and their spouses, Michael and Ashley Fox, Breanne and Randy Thesen, Lannie Fox; two great-grandchildren, Preston Thesen and Abigail Fox; and her sister and brother-in-law, Ina and Harvey Doyle.

Shirley is predeceased by her parents; sister, Helen Blake; brother, Bob Davies (who was killed in action in France during WWII); her husband, Gordon; and great-grandson, Gabriel Fox.

The motto that she has always lived by, was “The Power of Positive Thinking”.

Cecile and I are saddened to learn of Shirley’s passing. She and Gordon were great supporters of my musical stage shows over the years and we valued their friendship highly. She had that incredible artistic eye that is displayed in her many paintings. Our sincere condolences to all of the family.

  8. Good afternoon.
I was so sorry to hear of Shirley’s passing. Being a Winter Club member and also a huge curling fan/curling pin collector, I visited Shirley and Gordon often in their home in the Hamptons to talk curling and marvel at Gordon’s curling pin collection largely displayed in his home-made glass-topped table of the map of Canada. I also marvelled at Shirley’s amazing original paintings hanging proudly in their home. I was so taken with her abilities that I had her paint an original painting for me from one of my favourite local visiting spots – Spruce Meadows. It still is hanging proudly in my home with my other paintings.

I truly hope that all the wonderful memories you had of your parents and grandparents will help you through this most difficult time.

    Take care and best wishes,
    Gerry Malin
