September 18, 1936 – Vacoas, Mauritius
August 23, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

France Foo Kune Sen Foo Fat passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, after a brief stay in the Tom Baker Cancer Center in Calgary on August 23rd 2018, at the age of 81.

Born in Vacoas, Mauritius in 1936, France was loyal and generous, had a playful sense of humour and was known for his charm. He moved to London, England in 1958 where he worked for a woman’s clothing manufacturer and was a competitive ballroom dancer. In 1970 he immigrated to Canada with his wife Dulcie. France found employment in the University of Calgary’s MacKimmie Library where for 38 years he was a familiar and friendly face welcoming students and staff. He was described by many as a true ambassador in his dealings with library patrons. France was a talented dancer. He operated his own dance studio on the Island of Mauritius, and taught ballroom and Latin dancing evening classes for the City of Calgary in the 1970’s.

France is survived by his wife of 48 years, Dulcie; brothers, Peter, Noel, Maxime and Jules; sisters, Therese, Gladys, Monique and Lisa; daughters, Jill Adams (Mark), Germaine (Chris), Sabina (Brennan), Nadege (Jonathan and daughter Amelia), and Clea (Brock); granddaughters, Natasha, Solange, Allegra, Margot and grandson Loic.

France was one of 12 siblings. He is predeceased by his brothers, John and Gabriel and his sister Daisy.

Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Crowfoot, 82 Crowfoot Circle N.W., Calgary, AB), on Tuesday, August 28, 2018 at 2:30 p.m. Reception to follow at the funeral home. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

  17. What a true pleasure to have known France. I’ll always be grateful for the kindness and warmth he showed to me as a teenager when I would spend all that time around the house with Clea! He made a real impact and impression on me, and on many others, I know. It is rare to meet someone so genuinely good to every friend and stranger, so able to make you feel at ease, so generous with his knowledge, and with such an endearing spark of mischief. So glad to hear he was surrounded by family while he passed along to the next adventure. May it be full of good food and dancing! Wishing the whole family peace and sending you all so much love. Laura

  20. I first met France about 40 years ago when I was an undergrad student at the U of C, and worked with him when I took a part-time job as a stackman at the University Library. I enjoyed working with him and remember him as kind and thoughtful, and liked by all. Those were formative years for me and he was a prominent memory from that time in my life. I am grateful for his understanding and kindness toward me. In the intervening years I was surprised to discover that my daughter Laura had become friends with his daughter Clea. I am grateful as well for the impact that he had on my daughter. Marya and I offer our sincere condolences for your loss and we hope you will all find healing and peace.

I was saddened to hear of France’s passing. Seeing him at the gate in the MacKimmie Library always brightened my day. After his retirement, I had the good fortune to encounter him quite often while shopping at the Crowfoot Co-op. Every time he would have a warm greeting and a few minutes to chat. I know that France’s genuine warmth touched many beyond his family and close friends. My sympathies to Dulcie and his family during this very sad time.
