FOLEY, Lou Robert

July 10, 1946 – Athabasca, Alberta
April 11, 2019 – Calgary, Alberta

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Lou Robert Foley, a loving and devoted husband and father. Lou passed away on April 11th, 2019 at the age of 72, surrounded by his family. We take comfort knowing that he is no longer in pain and has moved on to a better place where he is undoubtedly back in fine form and talking the ears off all of our waiting family and friends that have passed on before him.

Lou was born and raised in the Kinuso and Slave Lake area, eventually going into the “Family Business” of forestry and wildfire management. With a career spanning over 40 years, he lived and worked in almost every corner of Alberta, making friends wherever he went.

Far from shy, Lou could always be counted on to offer up one of his smartass comments or good-natured jabs to anyone within sight or ear shot. Honest and kind to a fault, he was as open with his love and compassion as he was with his opinions. The impact he had on the people fortunate enough to know or meet him cannot be measured, each and every one of them having or sharing at least a couple of “Lou Stories”. He will be loved and missed by many.

Lou is survived by his loving wife of forty-eight years Sheila; two sons, Hudson and Jason; and his three granddaughters, Meaghan, Ciara and Fiona. He is also survived by his two sisters and their husbands, Patsy (Francis) Cyr and Doreen (Gary) Davis. He was predeceased by his daughter Trisha, mother and father Pat and Cecile Foley.

A celebration of Lou’s life will be held at a later date. Condolences may be forwarded through www.McInnisandHolloway.com.

In living memory of Lou Foley, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Cochrane, 369 RAILWAY STREET, COCHRANE, AB, T4C 2E2, Telephone: 403-932-4740.

    To the Foley family,
It doesn’t seem to matter how prepared we are, the good ones always go too soon and there is never enough time. We count ourselves blessed to be one of the fortunate that got to share some of those memorable “Lou stories”.

Lou always had a tool for any job. In fact he had two or three to do the same job and was more than willing to lend a hand. He will be greatly missed around the neighborhood.

  3. Dear Sheila and family,
Lou was one in a million and truly the salt of the earth. We feel blessed to have known him, if only for a short few years. He was in every way what it means to be a good neighbor and could always be found outside tinkering on something and quick with a smile and a story for all who passed by.
He will be missed dearly by our “group on the Green”.
Sheila – we are all here for you in every way.
    Xoxox Tim and Lisa

  6. Dear Sheila and Family
So sorry to hear of Lou’s passing, a great colleague and friend since we first met in Forestry School in Hinton in 1969. Lou’s sense of humor and quick wit will be missed but we have so many good memories from our times together in the goose hunt blinds of Manning, fishing in Alaska, times Elaine and I spent with Lou and Shelia in Las Vegas, and house boating on Shuswap Lake. As a colleague in wildfire with the province we went through some of Alberta’s tough fire years and enjoyed a camaraderie in the fire group like no other. We even survived a helicopter crash together, a time when Lou’s quick wit lightened the situation. Truly one of Alberta’s best. Our thoughts of Lou and Shelia will come often as we replay the good times working and playing hard.
    Love Howard and Elaine Gray
