FITZGERALD, Elaine Rosemarie

January 29, 1943 – Swift Current, Saskatchewan
November 29, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

It is with profound sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Elaine Rosemarie Fitzgerald (Stepak) on November 29, 2018. Surrounded by family, her dignity and strength in her last days mirrored the way she lived her life. Wife to Ken, mother to Mark (Jocelyn), Lisa (Nigel), Dan (Jennifer) and Cristin (Dave), grandmother to those she loved most dearly Christopher, Emily, Kathryn, Claire, Adam, Anna, Liam, Sam and Benny, sister to Doreen (Don) and sister-in-law to Helena, Elaine will live on in all those she touched. Elaine’s passing is preceded by her mother Anne.

Born in Swift Current Saskatchewan on January 29, 1943, her life and memory is defined by the mark she has left on those around her. From her career as an RN to her love as a wife, mother and grandmother, she lived her life with grace and dignity and will continue to serve as a beacon and light for her family. We fondly remember her commitment to her patients, her skill as a pianist, her love of horses and her joy on the golf course.

Special thanks to Dr. Bebb at the Tom Baker for supporting Elaine and giving us the most precious gift of time, the nurses on Unit 46 at Foothills Medical Center for their professionalism and care in her last days and to her extended care team and her many friends for the love with which she was surrounded.

We will all miss her and live with the overwhelming grief of her passing, but are comforted knowing that the lessons she taught us and the memories we have will ensure her legacy is always there.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Mary’s Catholic Church (East of the James Walker Trail and Highway 22 intersection, Cochrane, Alberta) on Wednesday, December 12, 2018 at 11:00 a.m., followed by a continuing of the celebration of Elaine’s life at Links of Glen Eagles, (100 Gleneagles Dr, Cochrane, AB).

In lieu of flowers or gifts, donations may be made in Elaine’s memory to the Canadian Cancer Society, 200 – 325 Manning Rd. N.E., Calgary, AB T2E 2P5 Telephone: (403) 205-3966, email

  8. Dear Ken and Family,

I have nothing but the fondest memories of Elaine. She had a way of making everyone who came into contact with her feel special and appreciated. An example of that was when my Dad (Joe) passed away Ken and Elaine spent some time with us following the funeral. They sat and had a long talk with some dear friends of mine. Following that conversation my friend said to me; “Elaine is the kind of person I want to grow up to be” I can’t think of any higher praise. Elaine has left a positive imprint on us all and while she is sadly missed, she will always be lovingly remembered.

    Jocelyn, Ken and Rebecca Spurr

  9. Elaine and I went to St Pat’s School in Swift Current. I knew Elaine was passionate about horses from the moment I moved next door to her in 1948. We walked like horses (toes down first, then heels) for the entire time I knew her as if we were horses. Imagine the excitement when Elaine got a horse, Twilight in about Grade 7. She and I walked to the stable every nice prairie day after school. The Herman boys had gone to Switzerland to go to school and left their horse, Ladd behind. Elaine had Twilight and I had Ladd. So many amazing times. When I got home about 7 pm my mother made me undress on the back step because she thought I smelled bad – I thought it was the most beautiful smell in the world. And, I still do. Elaine you are so vivid in my early memory – I know for sure, you’re riding Twilight in heaven. Good speed!
