FINN, William (Bill) Joseph

March 13, 1924 – Holden, Alberta
July 3, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

William (Bill) Joseph Finn of Calgary, passed away peacefully at South Health Campus surrounded by family on Tuesday, July 3, 2018 at the age of 94 years.

Bill was born March 13, 1924 in Holden, AB, to Ellen Finn (nee Cleary) and John (Jack) Finn, both of whom were born in Spaniards Bay, NL.

Bill began his career with Canadian National Railways at 17, working at more places in Western Canada than we have space to note. Bill embarked on a second career in real estate, working with his nephew Doug Endres, before finally retiring for good and beginning his favorite phase of life, as a snow bird. Bill and Muriel spent fifteen years wintering in Arizona, dancing, laughing, playing cards and golf, making new friends and travelling. Bill told wonderful stories about his days with the rail road, catching fast freights to his next assignment, about his younger days moving cattle on his favorite buckskin horse, and meeting Muriel at a dance and impressing her with his moves! Bill was a committed community volunteer most proud of his term as Chairman of the Tofield, AB Hospital Board. Bill enjoyed playing baseball, curling, and golf, and was riding his exercise bike until his last few months.

Bill loved keeping in touch with his friends and family. Thank you everyone who called, wrote and visited. He spent his last days comforted by your kindness and by his belief that he would, at last, be once again with Muriel.

He leaves to mourn his death sister Margaret Yelle; daughter and son-in-law Judy and Ron Shandro; sons and daughters-in-law Kevin Finn and Michele Fraser, and Mike Finn and Suzette Knudsen; grandchildren, Steve Shandro (Danielle Halverson), Bill Shandro (Chelsea), Elizabeth Finn, Sam Finn, and Jilisa Finn-Fraser; and great-grandchildren, Krista Shandro, Connor Shandro, and Harper Shandro. He also leaves nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and great-great-nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by the love of his life, Muriel, his brother Frank, and both parents.

At Bill’s request, there will be no funeral service. A family celebration of life will be held at a later date. Condolences may be forwarded through If friends so desire, memorial donations may be made directly to Dying With Dignity Canada, 802 – 55 Eglinton Avenue East, Toronto, ON M4P 1G8, or to the charity of your choice. A special thanks to Ken and Esther Houlton, family doctor Marius Conradie, and all of the caring, compassionate staff at South Health Campus who eased Bill’s passing and helped his family cope during this difficult time.

In living memory of Bill Finn, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Fish Creek, 14441 Bannister Road S.E., Calgary, AB, T2X 3J3, Telephone: 403-256-9575.

Memories abound of the helpful deeds of Aunt Muriel and Uncle Bill on behalf of myself and four sisters during difficult times. We remain forever grateful.
