FINDLAY, Muriel Evelyn

June 3, 1921 – Rosenheim, Alberta
December 1, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

Muriel Findlay of Calgary passed away on Saturday, December 1, 2018 at the age of 97 years.

Wife, Mom, Granny, Love, a life well lived, imparting value to all who knew her! She will be remembered well by those she touched, for her dignity, kindness, thoughtfulness and laughter. She was a great defender of right and a comforter to the distressed. She was “home” for her family, an accolade that had importance to all. Muriel will be missed.

Born on June 3, 1921 in a board and sod home on the prairie outside Maclin, SK to Charles and Catherine Henderson, she was the second youngest of eight children and lived the longest of all her brothers and sisters. She completed her schooling at Ellerslie School, outside south Edmonton. Muriel was active in oration, tap dance and selling at the Edmonton Market until she met her husband Roy during the war. He became a flight Lieutenant in the RCAF and was deployed to the European theatre where he stayed until 1946. They were engaged during the war and married in 1947 when he had returned home. They raised a family, David and Donald Findlay, in numerous small towns in Alberta working with the Alberta Wheat Pool, eventually putting down roots in Calgary in 1959 where she has lived ever since. She was active in the Rebecca’s then in Wheat Pool, Lionettes and Lions as an active hostess to all. She was a splendid painter in her later years and was an exceptional portraitist, as many have benefitted from her generosity. It is a most difficult to sum up a life as generously given to all. We miss you.

Muriel is survived by her sons, David (Joan) and Donald (Debbie); grandchildren, Donald, Daniel, Alexandra, Michelle, and Heather; and many great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Roy in 2013 and had been on her own until her passing.

Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Park Memorial, 5008 Elbow Drive S.W., Calgary, AB) on Wednesday, December 5, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. Reception to follow in the Hospitality Centre at the Funeral Home. Graveside Service to follow at Mountain View Memorial Gardens. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. 2. Kenneth Ramsay :

David, a long time ago in our high school days, Jack , Scott and I would convene at your house prior to our walk to school. Your mother was always cheerful and had a kind word for us (even if she was scolding you to hurry up so we wouldn’t be late). She even went out of her way to drive us to school if we were too late. She will be missed, but the memories will stay for a long time. All the best to you, Donald and your respective families.

  3. Liz (Rayner) Murray :

I’m sure your dear mother is at peace, reunited with all those she loved and cared for who went on ahead. Muriel was my mother, Lou (Caine) Rayner’s bridesmaid in 1946. In a conversation they had in 2015, Muriel said that being told she is cheerful was a great compliment. Bringing happiness to others was a gift your mother excelled at. The picture you chose for Muriel’s obituary shows what a genuinely lovely, radiant and good person she was. It was an honour to have known her. Sincere condolences from, Liz Murray and members of the Rayner family.
