FERO, Brian Joseph

February 28, 1945 – Port Arthur, Ontario
November 9, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Brian Fero on Friday, November 9, 2018, at the age of 73 years.

Brian’s story began on February 28, 1945 in Port Arthur (Thunder Bay), Ontario, born into an Italian Canadian family of restaurateurs. He shared many wonderful stories of growing up with three brothers and a large extended family. In 1962 Brian left Port Arthur and spent the next ten years of his life living and working throughout North Western Ontario where he met the love of his life, Eleanor. Brian and Eleanor married in December of 1971, and their son, Sean, was born the following year. In 1973, the family relocated to Calgary, and in 1974 Brian began his career at Calgary Transit where he remained until his retirement in 2001.

Brian was an avid coin collector, loved to cook and was a passionate follower of politics and world events. He was a great lover of film and music of all genres. Following his retirement, Brian and Eleanor enjoyed travelling and making memories throughout Canada, Mexico, Europe and South America.

2009 marked the birth of his granddaughter, Emma, who brought nothing but joy to his life.

In 2014 Brian contracted a rare autoimmune disease which started a most courageous battle. There were numerous close calls and setbacks during this 4 year battle and he faced them as he faced all other adversity in his life – head on and with conviction. A testament to the man he always was.

This disease lead to many additional health complications, which Brian ultimately succumbed to. Brian is survived by his wife Eleanor, son Sean, daughter-in-law Kathy, granddaughter Emma, eldest brother Bill and his family in California, and extended family throughout Canada and the United States. Brian was predeceased by his parents Bill and Ethel, his brothers Ian and Gene, and numerous extended family.

Brian’s courageous battle was not fought alone. The family would like to thank all of our friends and family from near and far for their constant love and support. We would also like to thank the many expert medical professionals and their staff as well as the staff of the Calgary hospitals and the home support teams who waged the battle alongside us. Your dedication and compassion will forever be remembered.

A small visitation was held earlier this week. A celebration of Brian’s life will be held in early 2019. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider a donation to the Salvation Army (a charity near to Brian’s heart), or to any charity of your choosing that is meaningful to you.
