EWAZKO, Sister Aldona

August 13, 1942 – Medicine Hat, Alberta
December 21, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

Sister Aldona Ewazko, a Sister of Charity of St. Louis for 57 years, died peacefully at Southwood Hospice in Calgary, December 21, 2018.

Sister Aldona, the second of three children, was born in Medicine Hat, AB, but grew up in Forest Lawn (Calgary). She joined the community in 1958 and made her first profession in August 1961.

She was well qualified for her ministry in education: Bachelor of Education, University of Alberta, Edmonton; Bachelor of Theology, Newman Theological College, Edmonton; Master of Divinity, University of Toronto (St. Michael’s College); Doctor of Ministry, University of Alberta (St. Stephen’s College). Aldona taught junior and high school in Edmonton, Calgary and Burnaby; field education and lecturer at Newman Theological College; and director of Church Ministry Programs at the Vancouver School of Theology.

Aldona had a strong sense of justice especially towards the vulnerable and the marginalized. She championed the role of women as equal members of society and the Church. She was drawn to ministry as a chaplain at the Matsqui Correctional Institution in Abbotsford, BC, and demonstrated a passion for restorative justice. More recently in Calgary, she spent countless hours in the resettlement and mentoring of refugee women as well as companioning our sisters at Providence Care and Father Lacombe Centres.

Aldona will be lovingly remembered by her community members; sister Irene Walz (Alex); nieces Sandra Ewazko-Mah (Foster); Brenda Kasha (Randy); nephews Chris Walz (Jacqueline); Bradley Walz (Monica) and great-nieces and nephews Sydney, Devin, Bailey, and Brayden.

She is predeceased by her mother, Elizabeth, brother Walter, and sister-in-law Joyce.

We are grateful to the staff at Southwood Hospice for the compassionate care given to Sister Aldona as she journeyed to God.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated December 28, 2018 at 11:00 am at St. Pius X Church (2424-24 Ave NW, Calgary, AB) with viewing from 10:00 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. Reception to follow at the Parish Hall.
