September 2, 2019 – Calgary, Alberta
Nick beloved husband of Lina Maria Esposito (nee DiMenna) of Calgary, AB, passed away on Monday, September 2, 2019 at the age of 85 years.
Nick was born on December 4th, 1933 in Naples, Italy, was orphaned at birth and raised until the age of five in an orphanage near the town of Marigliano, Italy.
He was adopted by his step parents, Vito and Verginia Esposito in 1938. Nick led a happy childhood with his new parents and an older step sister, Anna, on a small farm in Marigliano. Nick loved playing in the lemon and orange grove, he enjoyed working the soil, pumping water, pruning trees and picking lemons with his step dad in the late fall. His love for plants and gardening was seeded then, and it endured his whole life.
In 1952, when Nick was eighteen, he decided to immigrate to Canada. He boarded the ocean liner SS Conte Biancamano in Naples, with a contingent of likeminded countrymen, landed in Halifax and eventually arrived in Calgary. Nick was quickly recruited by Canadian Pacific Railway to work on railway construction and maintenance throughout western Canada.
Nick met his wonderful wife, Lina, in 1954 and they were married in 1956 in St. Mary’s Cathedral in Calgary. Their son James was born in 1959, followed by their daughter Lisa in 1964.
Nick continued with CP Rail until 1965 when he joined Air Canada and began working on the ramp at the Calgary International Airport. He held various roles there until his retirement after twenty-seven years of service. Throughout his life he was a hard worker and was the best at every title a man could hold: husband, father, Nonno, Zio, Congiato, and Compare. He even had informal titles bestowed by neighbors and friends, he’s been referred to as “The Mayor of Richmond Hill”, also “The King of Richmond Hill”, the “Honorary Chief of Police of Sierra Morena”, Zi Nicola, and the “Gatekeeper of the cul-de-sac”. Nick loved everyone in his life, genuinely, and it’s apparent that many people loved him back.
Nick was always a faithful man, he believed in God, our savior Jesus Christ, and he practiced his faith every day with his thoughts, words and actions. Nick was selfless, he lived for his family and his wide circle of friends, he had a heart of solid gold and a spirit as bright as the sun.
