ENNIS, Janet Munro (nee Sheets)

February 5, 1959 – December 11, 2018

Janet, beloved wife of Paul Ennis of Calgary, AB, passed away on December 11, 2018 at the age of 59 years.

Janet was generous, caring, hard-working, and made a difference to every life she touched. She was a dedicated and gifted educator and musician and shared her love of learning with thousands of students and colleagues. She was always there for her family and friends with whatever help was needed: a place to stay, a sympathetic ear, an extra pair of hands, a warm hug or some cold cash. Her family and friends will cherish her memory and strive to follow her example.

Janet grew up on a farm north of Picture Butte, Alberta. Her love of music was fostered through piano lessons and school band where she started playing alto saxophone. In 1973 the family moved to Lethbridge where Janet continued to grow musically, performing with numerous musical groups. After high school Janet lived in Lethbridge and worked in various food service jobs as well as at Leister’s music. She continued to perform and adding singing to her musical resume.

Janet moved to Calgary in 1980 with her first husband, Robert Bogdan. In 1982 Janet returned to school, earning a Bachelor of Education from the University of Calgary and beginning a distinguished teaching career. She worked with various private school programs and then with the Calgary Board of Education for over 25 years. She taught at Hillhurst Elementary and Acadia Elementary for twelve years each.

Teaching was Janet’s true calling. Every student was nurtured, guided, and given the opportunity and encouragement to learn and grow. She used her musical abilities to enrich her classroom and the lives of thousands of students, and helped with countless school concerts, plays, and special events. She was well loved by her students and her colleagues.

Janet’s daughter Laura was born on April 9th, 1987. Janet was a devoted mother who balanced her career and motherhood with ease. She passed on her love of music, with Laura playing the flute in band in school. Janet also passed on her love of learning with Laura obtaining her PhD in computer science in 2017.

Janet separated from her first husband and in 2009 married Paul Ennis. Janet and Paul shared many interests and adventures, including two trips to Australia, a Caribbean Cruise, and many camping trips in BC, Alberta, and the US. In 2007, Laura married Grigori Inozemtsev. Janet’s two grandsons Fyodor and Anton were born in 2014 and 2016, respectively. Janet has three grandchildren in Australia from her stepchildren.

After her cancer diagnosis in 2016, Janet displayed exemplary courage and grace, taking each day as a gift and a challenge to be met. She and Paul continued to share adventures and create treasured memories each day.

A special thanks to the incredible staff at the Chinook Hospice for their excellent care of Janet during her last three months.

Besides her loving husband Paul, Janet is survived by her daughter Laura Inozemtseva (Grigori) and grandsons Fyodor and Anton of San Jose California; brother David Sheets (Phyllis) of Sparwood BC; sister Alyson Fink (Ben) of Canmore AB; brother Neil Sheets (Marda Schindeler) of Lethbridge AB; stepsons Matthew Ennis (Chloe) and Justin Dapse (Sarah); step-Daughter Danielle George (Evan) and step-grandchildren Lily Dapse, Riley and Paige George of Melbourne, Australia; sisters-in-law Denise Fricke (Ray), Donna Alman of Brisbane, Australia, as well as sixteen nieces/nephews, and eleven great-nieces/nephews. Janet is also survived by Robert Bogdan and Erna Bogdan of Calgary. Janet was predeceased by her parents, Melvin and Janette Sheets.

It was a wonderful experience working with Janet at Acadia School for five years and then subbing in her classroom after my retirement. 14. Janet was a mentor to me in my first years of teaching and I consider myself so fortunate to have been able to learn from her. I remember one particularly terrible, horrible, no good, very bad (Thurs)day during my first week of teaching, Janet found me crying in the work room. With a smile and a nudge she took me for a walk in Riley Park. Then she brought me back to school and with a smile and a nudge said “you’ve got this.” My thoughts go out to her family in this difficult time. May your memories of Janet sustain you.

  15. I was so sorry to hear of Janet’s passing. Her presence on this earth helped make it a more pleasant place with her ever present optimistic view of life.
I first met Janet in the late 70’s when she joined our dance band “Chameleon”. She was a talented, delightful young musician that played alto sax and sang with the band. She was a welcome addition to our music group which consisted of four solemn male musicians, for she always brought a smile and upbeat attitude to our performances.
It was my honour to have known her kindness, music talents and charm. She was such a lovely, caring and gracious lady and will be sorely missed.

  16. Paul, it was such a gift to us when you and Janet moved in next door. Janet’s warm smile, caring nature and genuine interest in what was going on for our kids made ‘back fence chats’ a treat. Even on those really rough days she could still muster up a smile. Her love for you and the boys was evident in every interaction and was a real joy to see. Please accept our heartfelt love and condolences and a reminder that we are only next door whenever you need a hug, a beer or Emma’s homemade goodies. You are on our hearts and Janet will be sincerely missed.

  17. Janet was funny and thoughtful and generous and oh so creative. She was always on the run and ready to tell a great story. Her energy and care for her students ran deep and her love for her family was fierce. She was a mama bear and grand bear who wanted all that was wonderful for her daughter and grand babies. All of our lives are brief but not all of our lives have an impact. Janet made a difference.
