October 20, 1937 – Viking, Alberta
September 10, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta
Irene Endicott, beloved wife of Irwin, of Calgary, AB, passed away on Monday, September 10, 2018 at the age of 80 years.
Irene was born in Viking, Alberta, on October 20, 1937, the seventh of eight children. After graduating high school, she left the family farm to earn a teaching certificate at the University of Alberta, where she would meet her future husband Irwin. They were married in August of 1957, and moved to Estevan, Saskatchewan shortly after. Daughter Rosalind was born July 1958, followed by daughter Monica in December 1959.
As one of the original “working moms”, Irene established an impressive career in education, with stops in Ryley, Radville, Estevan, Calgary, and Rocky Mountain House. She held positions as a teacher, librarian, and assistant principal, and even found time to earn a Bachelor of Education degree, and a diploma in Library Sciences. Nicknamed “Iron-Eye” for the look she would sometimes give unruly students, Irene also created a relaxed, open, and fun learning environment, and encouraged students to believe in themselves.
Throughout her life, Irene always found ways to showcase her sense of humour and creativity, including school dance decorations, golf tournament outfits and themes, Halloween costumes for her family, and silly hats at every family event. Her unwavering positivity and lighthearted outlook was infectious, and a welcome reprieve from life’s curveballs.
With the arrival of her two grandsons, no family event was without Irene and her video camera. She adored her grandsons and documented every waking moment of their childhoods. These countless hours of footage have become an amazing gift for her family.
She will be forever held in the hearts of her husband, Irwin; daughter, Rosalind; grandsons, Samuel and Mitchell; son-in-law, John; numerous close friends and relatives; and her grand-dogs, Murphy and Stella.
Irene was predeceased by her cherished daughter, Monica.
Heartfelt thanks to Irene’s close friends for their love and support over the years, and a special thanks to the staff and volunteers at Dulcina Hospice for their wonderful care.
