ELAIN, Souheil Mikhail (Sam)

December 15, 1953 – Katana, Syria
April 21, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Souheil Elain on Saturday, April 21, 2018, beloved husband, father and grandfather.

Souheil moved from Syria to Canada in 1975 where he worked hard and established himself as a successful entrepreneur and respected member of the community. Souheil married the love of his life, Mary (Haddad) in 1981. Souheil and Mary were avid travelers. They often joked about how little room they had in their passports for additional stamps. Souheil always encouraged family gatherings and was viewed by them as the family patriarch. He was always very generous to his church and community and was always willing to lend a helping hand.

Souheil is survived by his loving wife of thirty-seven years, Mary; their three sons, John (Heather), Emil (Shalini), Andrew; and the light of his life, his grandson Gabriel.

Souheil is also survived by his mother Juhaina; his six siblings, Mona (Joseph), Ousyma (Tony), Mounir (Leila), Nouhad (Mishel), Nour, Wissam (Ghada); and many nieces and nephews.

Souheil was predeceased by his father Mikhail.

Souheil will be dearly missed by his family and many friends in Canada and Syria, who loved him. The family would like to thank the medical team and staff and the Westcare Sarcee Hospice for their care.

Relatives and friends are invited to Prayers and Tributes at Our Lady of Peace Maronite Catholic Church, (504 – 30th Avenue N.W., Calgary, AB) on Tuesday, April 24, 2016 at 6:00 p.m.

Condolence Messages

  1. I was in grade 7 in the old country (Syria ) , and Sam was my senior . That was the first time I knew who he was, and all of a sudden he disappeared. In 1978 I arrived in Calgary , and the first person I recognized, was him . He was with my dad at the airport trying to find me. From that time on he was there all the time, a big part of our lives. Husband to my sister and my dear brother and friend. And to my friend and brother, safe journey and I will see again. Love Andy (Anwar)
