DUNCAN, Myrle Isobel

May 1, 1923 – Quebec City, Quebec
October 25, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

The family of Myrle Duncan are saddened to announce the passing of our dear Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother, Aunt, and Great Aunt on October 25, 2018 at the age of 95 years.

Myrle was born in Quebec City and spent most of her early years in Montreal. At a time when most women were content to be wives and homemakers, Myrle completed an Arts degree at McGill University. It was there she met her husband, Alec. They moved to Calgary in 1952 where they raised their 3 kids, Peter, John and Anne. They embraced the Alberta lifestyle, finding a love for skiing, hiking, and camping. Alec predeceased Myrle in February 1962, leaving her to finish raising the 3 children on her own, with much support from St. Matthews United Church, friends and neighbors in Elbow Park, the dental community and ski friends.

In 1966, Myrle took a “temporary” job at the University of Calgary Medical Library. She worked there for 25 years! Myrle devoted her life to the kids, instilling in them a love of the outdoors, the value of Sunday dinners, and an independent spirit. In her retirement, she enjoyed traveling through Canada and the US, Panama as well as Great Britain, Europe and even Iceland! She devoted many volunteer hours to causes she believed in; St Matthews United Church, CGIT, Camp Kasota, Inn from the Cold, 88 Winter Olympics, and COP Guest Services.

Myrle is survived by her 3 grown children, Peter (Marianne), John (Alison), and Anne (Murray) as well as 8 now grown up grand children, Sarah, Mikkel, Jena, Leah, Alexis, Jessica, Jimmy and Rebecca. She was the proud Great Grandma to Emeric and Liam. She was lucky enough to also have close relationships with her nephew David and his wife Cathy and their kids, Lindsey and Chris, as well as her second cousin Jim and Deb Yeates.

Myrle will be fondly remembered by many great friends, young and old including her cherished hiking group. Myrle would smile if you poured yourself a rye and ginger and made a toast to a life well lived!

A memorial service will take place at St Matthews United Church (2035 26A St. S.W.), on Friday, November 2, at 1:30 PM

If friends so desire, donations in her memory can be made to St Matthews United Church (2039 – 26A Street S.W., Calgary, AB, T3E 2B9)

In living memory of Myrle Duncan, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Park Memorial, 5008 Elbow Drive S.W., Calgary, AB, T2S 2L5, Telephone: 403-243-8200.
