DUMAINE, Mary Nancy (nee Wachowich)

February 23, 1927 – June 28, 2019

Mary Dumaine of Calgary passed away peacefully on Friday, June 28, 2019 at the age of 92 years at the Sarcee Hospice.

Mary was born in the hamlet of Opal, Alberta, where she grew up with her five sisters and two brothers in a fieldstone home built by her parents Philip and Anastasia Wachowich. The family moved to Edmonton where Mary attended St Mary’s High School. Mary went on to further education and graduated from the University of Alberta in 1950 with a degree in Pharmacy.

Mary married Dr. Leo Dumaine in Edmonton in 1958. After living in Montreal for four years, they moved to Westlock, raising four children. She valued education and all her children are graduates from the University of Alberta. Mary’s final years were spent in Calgary busy attending concerts, dinners, and family events with her six grandchildren.

Mary’s greatest loves were family and gardening. She took great joy in preparing fresh food from her garden for her family and visitors. We will miss you Mom: we hope you find peace in the gardens of heaven.

Mary is survived by her daughter Suzanne L. Dumaine (husband Emery Varga, grandson Vincent), three sons; Daniel J. Dumaine, Robert E. Dumaine (wife Melissa, grandchildren Joseph, Emily, and Isaac), and Leo B. Dumaine (wife Gisele, grandchildren Mark and Kate) all of Calgary. She is further survived by her siblings Patricia Hlady (Ben) of Grand Bend Ontario, The Honorable Allan Wachowich (Bette) and Ed’s wife Lucy all of Edmonton. Mary was predeceased by her husband Dr. Leon Daniel Joseph Dumaine, parents Philip and Nancy Wachowich (nee Stepchuk), her sisters Elizabeth Blinston (Harold), Victoria Wachowich, Adelaide Callahan (Gary), Cecelia Kokotailo (George), and her brother Edward Wachowich.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Peter’s Catholic Church (541 Silvergrove Drive NW, Calgary, AB) on Thursday, July 4, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. Reception to follow in the Parish Hall at the church. Condolences may be forwarded through
