DOWSE, Ann Stiven

August 28, 1935 – Cork, Ireland
May 9, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

Ann, beloved wife, mother, sister, aunt, grandmother and friend, passed away on May 9, 2018 at the age of 82 years.

Born in Ireland in 1935, Ann was the eldest of four children (two brothers and one sister). Ann immigrated to Canada in 1964. Through her life, she lived in various cities including Cork, Limerick and Dublin, Ireland; Toronto, London and Calgary, Canada; Knowl Hill and Maidenhead, England; Addis Ababa, Ethiopia; and Manila, Philippines. Ann was an avid traveller, having visited over fifty countries during her life.

Ann worked as an executive secretary in Ireland, Canada and Ethiopia before having her children and becoming a full-time mother. In the late 1980s Ann went back to school, and she achieved a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature from the University of Calgary in 1992.

Ann loved camping in their trailer in the mountains and visits to the ocean. Ann also loved books and was an avid reader. She was a member of McDougall United Church in Calgary, and had been an active volunteer in Calgary, including as a pioneering volunteer with the Food Bank as well as with Meals on Wheels.

Besides her loving husband Brian, Ann is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Susan Dowse and Bryan Valiquette; son and daughter-in-law, Michael Dowse and Jennifer Wilson; her four grandchildren, Wilson and Charlotte Dowse and Isabelle and Sophie Valiquette; and her sister and brother-in-law, Margaret and Fraser Pelley. Ann was predeceased by her son Alan Dowse; her siblings, William Gibson and John Gibson; and her parents Molly and Stiven Gibson. Ann will also be lovingly remembered by her many nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends across the globe.

A Celebration of Life will be held in honour of Ann on Saturday October 13, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at McDougall United Church in Calgary (8516 Athabasca St SE, Calgary, AB). The service is to start at 11:00 a.m. with a light lunch to follow. Friends and family of Ann are warmly welcomed to join the celebration.
