DONG, Young Tai “Don”

May 8, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

Young Tai “Don” Dong of Calgary, passed away on Tuesday, May 8, 2018 at the age of 86 years.

He was born April 10, 1932 in Loungvan, Guangdong, China. In 1952, Don immigrated to Lordsburg, New Mexico. Drafted and stationed in Fort Bliss, Texas, he served the US army from 1954 to 1956. In 1956, he immigrated to Elnora, Alberta and married his beloved wife, Donna, they were married for 68 years. Together, they moved to Calgary in 1958 and opened “Family Groceteria”, which they happily operated for 57 years. Don was a sharp shooter in the military and enjoyed hunting wild game. As a member of the YMCA, he remained consistently active from 1960 to 2015; moreover, Don cycled to the Calgary Zoo every morning. As a young man, he was a gifted athlete who loved playing competitive tennis, basketball, badminton, and swimming. Since 1980, Don and his wife were known to be avid ballroom dancers. His value of education inspired his children to pursue their respective degrees and achieve great success in their lives.

Don is survived by his loving wife Donna (nee Leong); his five children, John (Nellie), Dennis (Susan), Judy (Albert Lui), Jeanie (Michael Chau), and Debbie; fourteen grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

Don was loved, respected, and admired by many for his intelligence, generosity, kindness, and honesty. He will be forever in our hearts.

Those wishing to pay their respects may do so at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Chapel of the Bells, 2720 Centre Street North, Calgary, AB) on Friday, May 18, 2018 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Chapel of the Bells, 2720 Centre Street North, Calgary, AB) on Saturday, May 19, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. Graveside Service to follow at Queen’s Park Cemetery. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.
