DEWIT, Nicolaas (Nick) Cornelis

June 18, 1925– Hensbroek, North Holland, Netherlands
August 7, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

Nick Dewit passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, August 7, 2018 at the age of 93. Aggie, his beloved wife of 64 years, and his family were by his side.

Nick was born on June 18, 1925 in Hensbroek, North Holland, Netherlands. He attended horticultural school in Holland before serving three years with the Dutch Army in Indonesia. After completing his service, Nick returned to Holland and shortly thereafter met Aggie at a community dance. The two married six months later and ten days after the wedding, began their journey to Canada settling in Calgary, where Nick established Dewit’s Landscaping and Nursery. After selling the business in 1995, Nick’s life’s work became his favourite hobby as he continued to care for gardens and country properties. His green thumb has left a living legacy in all areas of Calgary and beyond. Nick never met a stranger he couldn’t befriend and was a proud member of the Dutch Canadian Club of Calgary where he maintained many long-lasting friendships.
Nick was exceedingly proud of and grateful for his close-knit family.

He is survived by his wife, Aggie; his children, Annet (Mark), John (Sheryl), Pat, and Ray (Catherine); grandchildren, Colin (Kelsi), Jordan, Matthew, Mark (Courtney), Emma (Chris), Katie, Megan (Chad), Madeline, and Kimberly (Curtis); and great-grandchildren, Owen, William, and Austin. Nick is also survived by his brother Piet (Truus), his sister Corrie, and sisters-in-law Sjaan and Corry in Holland, as well as many nieces and nephews. Nick was predeceased by his parents and numerous sisters and brothers and their spouses.

Relatives and friends are invited to Prayers and Tributes at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Fish Creek, 14441 Bannister Road S.E., Calgary, AB) on Friday, August 17, 2018 at 7:00 p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Patrick Parish (1414 Shawnessy Blvd. S.W., Calgary, AB) on Saturday, August 18, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. Reception to follow at the church. 3. Peggy & Michael Warwaruk :

Our Thoughts and Prayers are with Nick’s family at this very sad time. We knew Nick through Saint Patrick’s Parish when he assisted counting the collection. Nick was a real gentleman, we had many lovely conversations with him and we were very sorry when he resigned from the team because of health reasons. Rest In Peace Nick.

  4. Shannon Engeland - Engeland Familiy :

Our beautiful landscape is one of Nick’s living legacies. As I look to the many trees, shrubs and flowers Nick planted in my yard I am reminded of my daughter, then an extremely talkative and inquisitive toddler following Nick around my yard for hours endlessly repeating the refrain – “Why Nick Why”? I don’t think she ever got answers to her incessant questions because he couldn’t hear her, and she couldn’t understand him!
We will plant a new tree in that yard he so lovingly took care of in his memory.
